In 1889 Whitechapel, London is still haunted by the Ripper murders, and H Division is tasked with holding a fragile line between order and chaos. Set in the East End of London six months after the Ripper killings, Ripper Street follows the men of the hard-pressed H Division as they police Whitechapel at its most volatile. Detective Inspector Edmund Reid leads a small unit that includes the forceful Sergeant Bennet Drake and an American surgeon turned police consultant, Captain Homer Jackson. Their investigations move through crowded lodging houses, music halls, and back alleys, where poverty, new industry, and organized vice collide. While each episode centers on a fresh crime, the series builds a larger picture of a community struggling to recover from trauma and the relentless glare of the press. Reid’s pursuit of order is complicated by internal corruption, shifting alliances, and personal costs that reach beyond the station.
