Zachary Levi

Intro

Zachary Levi is an American actor whose work includes Chuck Bartowski in Chuck, the voice of Flynn Rider in Tangled and the adult superhero in Shazam! His career also includes Broadway musicals and continuing television roles, from Kipp Steadman in Less Than Perfect to Benjamin Ettenberg in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. These parts use several forms of performance: conversational comedy in a series, a voice created for animation, musical theatre before a live audience and physical action within effects-driven films. His credited work provides a way to follow those changes across media.

Career snapshot

Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Levi grew up performing and later attended Buena High School in California. Less Than Perfect gave him the role of Kipp Steadman from 2002 to 2006, before Chuck began in 2007. In a Backstage interview, he recalled an early delight in making another person laugh. He also described auditioning for Mel Brooks and Susan Stroman's Young Frankenstein while committed to the Chuck pilot. Although the stage opportunity appealed to him, his existing television contract took precedence, delaying the Broadway part of his career.

The entry point

Chuck ran from 2007 to 2012 and made Levi its central performer in a story combining computer-store work with espionage. Disney's Tangled followed during that run, opening in November 2010 with Levi voicing Flynn Rider opposite Mandy Moore's Rapunzel. Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the animated musical follows their unlikely partnership after Flynn enters Rapunzel's tower. Levi's participation belongs to the animated version, whose character performance is created through voice and animation together. It should not be confused with a live-action portrayal simply because the character's name is shared across adaptations.

Screen identity and style

Levi made his Broadway debut as Aaron in First Date, which opened in August 2013 and closed in January 2014. He received a Theatre World Award for that performance. In 2016 he played Georg Nowack in the Broadway revival of She Loves Me opposite Laura Benanti's Amalia Balash. The production brought him a Tony nomination for leading actor in a musical and a Drama Desk nomination. Those nominations were recognition for his stage performance, not wins or screen awards. The two productions established a substantial musical-theatre strand alongside his film and television work.

Collaborations and patterns

Shazam! cast Levi as the adult superhero form of Billy Batson, while Asher Angel played the teenager. In JoBlo's set interview, Levi described initially declining to audition, then sending a recording for a different part before being invited to test for the lead. He discussed the challenge of making extraordinary powers believable while keeping a young person's enthusiasm at the center of the performance. David F. Sandberg directed the 2019 film. Levi returned in Shazam! Fury of the Gods in 2023, continuing the same character rather than playing an unrelated hero with a similar costume.

Era reflection

Other screen work includes Fandral in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, Luke Collins in Heroes Reborn and Benjamin Ettenberg in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Backstage reported that the Maisel creators had seen him in She Loves Me before offering him the television role, a direct connection between his stage and screen careers. American Underdog placed him in a biographical sports drama as Kurt Warner. The official film materials describe a story about Kurt and Brenda Warner, developed by the Erwin brothers and Kingdom Story Company, extending his work beyond fictional adventure characters.

Legacy and rediscovery

The gallery documents three different public appearances. A photograph credited to Heroes & Villains dates from December 2017, a Super Festivals image records GalaxyCon Columbus in December 2024, and Genevieve photographed Levi at a 2012 convention appearance. The images are independently credited and show the actor addressing or meeting an audience. They are not production stills from Chuck, Tangled or Shazam! Their dates provide a visual record across more than a decade, while the selected credits connect that public presence to the individual roles and productions discussed in the biography.
