Intro

Wes Chatham is an American actor best known as Amos Burton in The Expanse. His screen work also includes The Unit, The Help, the two Hunger Games: Mockingjay films and Ahsoka. Amos gave him a long-running role in a science-fiction ensemble, while other parts placed him in military drama, historical fiction and action stories. He later extended his connection with The Expanse into comics as a co-writer. His career is therefore not confined to the physical toughness that is immediately visible in some of his best-known characters.

Career snapshot

Born in 1978 and raised in North Georgia, Chatham served in the Navy before establishing his professional acting career. His official biography describes aviation firefighting and crash-and-salvage work aboard the USS Essex. A film production aboard the ship introduced him to casting director Robi Reed during the making of Antwone Fisher. He subsequently moved toward work in Hollywood and became a regular in Showtime's Barbershop. This account explains the connection between military service and his entry into screen work without turning his fictional military roles into claims about his own service record.

The entry point

Earlier film credits include Corporal Steve Penning in In the Valley of Elah and Carlton Phelan in The Help, the brother of Emma Stone's character. On The Unit he played Sam McBride, also known as Whiplash. He took the leading role in The Philly Kid before appearing as Castor in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and Part 2. The two Mockingjay films were released in 2014 and 2015. These roles provide a chronological bridge to The Expanse, which began its television run in 2015.

Screen identity and style

As Amos Burton, Chatham worked within the Rocinante crew and the political conflicts of The Expanse. His performance continued through the series' conclusion in 2022. In a 2018 interview with The Expanse Lives, he explained that the novella The Churn helped him develop the character's psychological background. He described researching trauma and consulting a psychiatrist about the fictional character. That preparation belongs to his acting process; it is not a diagnosis of the performer. He also discussed separating what he knew from the novels from what the television audience had learned.

Collaborations and patterns

Ahsoka gave him the masked role of Captain Enoch in 2023. A production interview published by Frame.io describes Chatham recording the performance and the subsequent sound work used to shape Enoch's voice. The result combines an actor's contribution with the work of the production's sound team. In 2026 he appeared as Donnie in the second season of Cross. Speaking to ComicBook.com, he distinguished that original television character from the existing literary characters in James Patterson's world, explaining that his work began with the script rather than a pre-existing Donnie story.

Era reflection

His involvement with The Expanse continued beyond the completed television series. BOOM! Studios announced him as co-writer of The Expanse: A Little Death alongside Andy Diggle, with art by Francesco Pisa and creative guidance from James S. A. Corey. The comic follows the television continuity after its final season and the earlier Dragon Tooth story. This is a separate creative project, not evidence that additional television seasons have been produced. It gives Chatham another way to work with the fictional world and the character he had played over several years.

Legacy and rediscovery

The gallery records three distinct public appearances: a 2024 WonderCon photograph by Gage Skidmore, a 2019 event image by Crosa and a 2016 panel photograph with Dominique Tipper by Jeff Hitchcock. Chatham is pictured as himself, not wearing Amos Burton's or Captain Enoch's costume. The panel image also preserves a visible connection with a fellow Expanse performer. Each photograph retains its original creator, date and Creative Commons terms, making the images a documented public-career timeline alongside the production and character credits.
