Wayne Maunder was a Canadian-born American actor associated with three television series: Custer, Lancer and Chase. The Television Academy records his birth in Four Falls, New Brunswick, on December 19, 1937, and his death on November 11, 2018. His best-known work belongs to the period when network westerns remained prominent and contemporary police dramas offered another route for leading actors. The publicity photographs on this page show that western period directly, including the long-haired Custer characterization and the different appearance he adopted for Lancer.
Raised in Bangor, Maine, Maunder attended Bangor High School and later studied literature and drama at Compton Junior College in California. An amateur production helped turn his attention toward acting. His early television work included The Monroes, where he used the name James Wilder before returning to his own name. This was the beginning of a relatively concentrated screen career rather than a lifetime of uninterrupted leading roles. His principal series followed one another within a few years, with guest appearances and feature films adding other kinds of work.
Custer cast him as George Armstrong Custer in 1967. The ABC western lasted a single short run, but its publicity established a strongly recognizable look through his moustache, long hair and cavalry costume. The photograph dated July 21, 1967, preserves that presentation. It should be read as an image of a television characterization, not as historical evidence about the real Custer. Comparing it with the later CBS portraits makes the change in Maunder's screen appearance especially clear, even before considering the different stories told by the two programmes.
In Lancer, broadcast from 1968 to 1970, Maunder played Scott Lancer opposite James Stacy as Johnny and Andrew Duggan as their father, Murdoch. Scott's educated background contrasted with his half-brother's gunslinger history, giving the family western two distinct younger leads. The series centred on the ranch and the relationships among its household, with Elizabeth Baur also in the regular cast. A clean-shaven portrait from July 1968 and a separate April 1969 publicity photograph document this phase. They are distinct photographs rather than differently cropped copies of one exposure.
The Seven Minutes moved Maunder into a courtroom story in 1971. Directed by Russ Meyer, it cast him as lawyer Mike Barrett in a case involving a bookseller, an allegedly obscene book and a prosecutor's claim about its influence. Philip Carey played the opposing district attorney. The premise gave Maunder a contemporary professional role outside the western setting with which audiences associated him. His later screen credits also included guest work in The F.B.I., Kung Fu and The Rookies, and an appearance as Cavanaugh in Porky's.
Chase returned him to a regular television ensemble in the 1973-1974 season, this time as Sergeant Sam MacCray. Mitchell Ryan headed the cast as Captain Chase Reddick, with younger officers supporting the special police unit. The original episode record lists twenty-three instalments and a change in the supporting cast partway through the run. Maunder's role remained separate from Ryan's title character. Set beside Custer and Lancer, the programme shows his move from period cavalry and ranch stories into the contemporary police-series format.
A later generation encountered a dramatized version of Maunder through Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, in which Luke Perry portrayed him in the recreation of a Lancer production. Entertainment Tonight's coverage of the film's deleted scene explicitly distinguishes Perry, the real actor Maunder, and the western being staged within the film. That layered portrayal is not a new acting credit for Maunder himself. His own work remains in the original programmes and films, and the surviving network publicity provides a direct visual record of the performer behind Scott Lancer.
Three distinct network publicity photographs document Custer and Lancer. The unidentified accompanying performer in the 1969 photograph is not assigned an unsupported name.
