Wagner Moura is a Brazilian actor and director whose career connects Brazilian cinema with international television and film. His portrayal of Pablo Escobar in Narcos brought him a large worldwide audience, but that performance followed substantial work at home and did not define the limits of his career. From Elite Squad and Elysium to Sergio, Civil War and The Secret Agent, his roles place individuals within larger systems of power and conflict. The festival photographs collected here show the performer discussing and presenting that work, rather than depicting him in character.
Moura began acting in theatre in Salvador, Bahia, before establishing himself on screen. The Lisbon Film Festival's career account highlights his appearance in Hector Babenco's Carandiru in 2003 and subsequent leading work, including Jose Padilha's Elite Squad in 2007. Neill Blomkamp's Elysium in 2013 expanded his international profile, and Olivier Assayas's Wasp Network followed in 2019. These films brought him into different national and production contexts while retaining his connection to Brazilian filmmaking. His movement into international work developed from an existing career rather than beginning with a streaming series.
Narcos gave Moura the sustained central role of Pablo Escobar across its first two seasons, released in 2015 and 2016. His interview at the second season's release described that season as the end of his time playing Escobar in the original series. The performance earned a Golden Globe nomination in 2016. The distinction between an actor's period on a programme and the programme's entire run matters here: later seasons of Narcos should not be treated as additional seasons of his original leading performance. His Escobar remains one part of a broader filmography.
In Sergio, Moura portrayed the Brazilian diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello. Netflix's production account places the character between an international diplomatic career and the prospect of a different personal life with the woman played by Ana de Armas. An assignment in Baghdad leads to the attack on the United Nations headquarters and a struggle for survival. This is a different form of historical portrayal from Narcos, built around diplomacy, relationships and the consequences of professional commitments. The Holland Festival also credits Moura as a producer of Sergio, showing his involvement beyond the leading performance.
Moura made his feature directing debut with Marighella, which premiered at Berlin in 2019. The film concerns the writer and political activist Carlos Marighella and draws on Mario Magalhaes's biography. Seu Jorge plays the title character; Moura's responsibility here is behind the camera, a distinction easily lost when an actor's filmography is treated as a list of screen roles. The Lisbon festival presented the film in 2019, the year of the portrait reproduced in this gallery. Directing gave Moura another way to engage with Brazilian history through the construction of a whole film.
Alex Garland's Civil War placed Moura alongside Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny and Stephen McKinley Henderson in a story following journalists through a divided United States. The SXSW photograph records him at the film's 2024 world premiere. In The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonca Filho, he plays Marcelo, a man arriving in Recife in 1977 in hopes of reuniting with his son. Cannes awarded Moura its acting prize in 2025, and the Golden Globes record confirms his drama-actor win in 2026. These later honours recognised a performance distinct from his earlier television breakthrough.
His public work also includes the International Labour Organization's campaign against forced labour, for which he was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador in 2015. That activity sits alongside, rather than replacing, an expanding range of screen work, including Shining Girls and the animated Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. A useful route through his career is to compare the criminal biography of Narcos, the diplomatic drama of Sergio and the political atmosphere of The Secret Agent. Each asks different questions of the performer, while the credited festival images document the professional appearances surrounding his films.
Three distinct festival photographs trace appearances in 2019, 2024 and 2025. They are event photographs, not scenes from the films.
