Travis Willingham is an American voice actor and a founding performer of Critical Role, where tabletop role-playing became an ongoing public storytelling project. His work includes Roy Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist, Thor in Marvel animation and games, and characters such as Grog, Fjord and Chetney at the Critical Role table. He also serves as the company's chief executive officer. The combination gives his career an unusual shape: he performs characters written for established productions while helping develop a company around stories made collaboratively through play.
Before Critical Role became a major part of his public identity, Willingham was familiar to anime audiences through English-language dubbing. Anime Boston's guest biography identifies Colonel Roy Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist among his central credits. A 2009 Japan Society interview places that work beside his performance as the Hulk in The Super Hero Squad Show and his work on Soul Eater. These earlier records show a career already moving between imported animation and American productions, with different recording traditions and different expectations for the character's place in an ensemble.
Critical Role provides a particularly clear view of Willingham making performance choices in response to other people. The company's campaign guide identifies Grog Strongjaw with Vox Machina, Fjord with the Mighty Nein and Chetney with Bells Hells. They are separate characters from separate campaigns, rather than interchangeable names for one hero. Grog's directness, Fjord's questions about identity and Chetney's very different presence give an audience several ways into Willingham's work. At the table, the actor must also listen to unexpected developments and let the ongoing story influence his response.
The move into animation changed the form of that storytelling. Amazon's 2019 announcement named the original Critical Role cast as returning performers and executive producers for The Legend of Vox Machina. The series brings characters developed through long sessions into scripted episodes, with animation, editing and a larger production team shaping what viewers see. Willingham's involvement therefore extends beyond repeating familiar dialogue. The adaptation is a distinct production, even when it retains the same performer and recognizable character, and its credits should be understood alongside the original tabletop show.
The Mighty Nein provided another opportunity to revisit a character in a different medium. In a 2025 WBUR interview about the animated series, Willingham discussed Fjord's search for identity after separation from his crew and captain. That account gives a specific dramatic concern behind the fantasy setting. A viewer can follow the character through uncertainty and relationships rather than only through powers or combat. It also shows why an adaptation can offer a fresh introduction for an audience that has never watched the many hours of the original campaign.
Willingham's work outside Critical Role remains substantial. His official company biography lists Thor across several Marvel productions, Knuckles in Sonic Boom, King Roland II in Sofia the First and Jaro Tapal in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. These credits move between superhero action, comedy, children's fantasy and a game set in an established film universe. A powerful voice can support each of them, but the characters do not all want the same thing or speak with the same emotional weight. The role and the surrounding cast determine how that sound functions.
As an executive and performer, Willingham occupies both the production and acting sides of a company closely associated with its cast. His public appearances also connect the work with audiences who know him from different franchises. The gallery uses three distinct convention photographs: WonderCon in 2017, a Marvel Games panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, and GalaxyCon San Jose in 2025. Each image retains its event, photographer and license. Together they document public career moments without presenting convention clothing or a panel pose as an in-character production still.
Three distinct event photographs document Willingham discussing his work with convention audiences.
