Intro

Tom Ewell was an American stage, film and television actor whose best-known role was Richard Sherman in The Seven Year Itch. He played the part on Broadway before repeating it opposite Marilyn Monroe in Billy Wilder's 1955 film. The stage performance brought a Tony Award and the film brought a Golden Globe, making the same character central to two phases of his career. His work extended well beyond that success, from supporting film comedy to the television detective series Baretta and the western sitcom Best of the West.

Career snapshot

Born Samuel Yewell Tompkins in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1909, Ewell established himself in theatre before becoming a familiar screen performer. His Broadway debut came in 1934, and his stage career continued over several decades. The Michener Art Museum's account records his service in the United States Navy during World War II and his later connection with Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He and his wife bought a farm there in 1950. His local theatrical work included Harvey in 1962 and Clifford Odets's The Country Girl in 1967 at the Bucks County Playhouse.

The entry point

George Axelrod's The Seven Year Itch opened on Broadway in November 1952. Ewell's Richard Sherman is a married man left in the city while his family is away, whose imagination turns an encounter with a neighbor into an elaborate personal crisis. The original production earned him the 1953 Tony for his leading performance. A surviving publicity photograph shows him with Paulette Girard in the stage play. That photograph belongs to the theatrical production and should not be confused with a still from the later film with Monroe.

Screen identity and style

Billy Wilder directed the screen adaptation and shared its screenplay credit with Axelrod. Released in 1955, it retained Ewell as Sherman and cast Monroe as the upstairs neighbor. AFI's production history documents the casting discussions before Ewell was selected, showing that his Broadway success did not automatically settle the film casting. His eventual screen performance won the Golden Globe for musical or comedy actor at the 1956 awards. The distinction between the film's release year and the award year also separates this honor from his earlier Tony win.

Collaborations and patterns

The Girl Can't Help It followed in 1956, with Frank Tashlin directing Ewell as talent agent Tom Miller. Jayne Mansfield played Jerri Jordan and Edmond O'Brien played Fats Murdock, whose plans for Jerri drive the show-business comedy. Ewell's agent attempts to turn her into a singing star, while the film presents performances by musicians including Little Richard, Fats Domino and Gene Vincent. Its deliberately theatrical introduction has Ewell address the audience before the image expands into CinemaScope and color. The role places his comic reactions within a much larger spectacle of music and visual jokes.

Era reflection

Television supplied another sustained part of Ewell's working life. The Tom Ewell Show ran during the 1960–61 season. In the 1970s he played Billy Truman alongside Robert Blake in Baretta, receiving a 1977 Emmy nomination for continuing supporting performance in a drama series. He later played Doc Kullens in Best of the West during 1981–82. Guest appearances included Taxi and Murder, She Wrote. These credits show the range of settings in which he worked after his leading film years, from contemporary crime stories to broad ensemble comedy.

Legacy and rediscovery

Ewell died in 1994, leaving a career remembered through both theatrical records and widely circulated films. The gallery uses three separate historical sources: a 1958 publicity portrait, a 1952 Broadway photograph with Paulette Girard and a frame from the 1949 trailer for Adam's Rib. The trailer's original printed name remains visible rather than being presented as a clean studio portrait. Each image is identified by its actual context and public-domain source record, preserving the difference between a publicity sitting, a stage scene and a film promotion.
