Timothy Hutton is an American actor whose screen work stretches from Conrad Jarrett in Ordinary People to Nate Ford in Leverage and the older Hugh Crain in The Haunting of Hill House. His early breakthrough came in a family drama directed by Robert Redford. Decades later, a continuing television ensemble gave him a very different role: a damaged insurance investigator using his knowledge to organize elaborate cons. Those characters offer useful points of entry into a career built across feature films and television.
Ordinary People, released in 1980, follows a family after the death of its older son. Hutton plays the surviving brother, Conrad, opposite Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore as his parents. Paramount's account emphasizes the guilt and emotional distance dividing the family. The role brought Hutton the supporting-actor Oscar at the 1981 ceremony. Redford also won for directing, and the film received the picture and adapted-screenplay awards, placing the young actor's performance within a production recognized across several disciplines.
Leverage ran from 2008 to 2012 with Hutton as Nate Ford. Electric Entertainment identifies Nate as a former insurance investigator who becomes a thief and leads a group targeting abuses by the wealthy and powerful. The team pairs him with Gina Bellman's Sophie, Christian Kane's Eliot, Aldis Hodge's Hardison and Beth Riesgraf's Parker. Their different specialties let Nate's plans become ensemble stories, with deception, physical action and improvised performances all contributing to the outcome of each case.
Discussing the first season with TV Guide, Hutton described his attraction to a script that made room for fun while giving Nate serious personal damage. He saw the work of helping others as a way for the character to turn his attention outward. He also stressed the unstable trust among the team members. That combination explains why Nate can function as the planner without remaining a remote, invulnerable authority: his own behavior can put the operation and his relationships at risk.
The American Film Institute's credits trace the film work between these television landmarks. Hutton played cadet Brian Moreland in Taps, Daniel Isaacson in Daniel, and Christopher Boyce in The Falcon and the Snowman. Later credits include the double role of Thad Beaumont and George Stark in The Dark Half. These parts move through military-school conflict, political history, espionage and horror. They also show why reducing the intervening years to a single genre would miss much of his work as a leading and supporting performer.
American Crime brought a 2015 Emmy nomination for his performance as Russ. The Haunting of Hill House subsequently cast him as the older Hugh Crain, with Henry Thomas playing Hugh earlier in life. In a Television Academy interview, Hutton described responding first to the script and wanting to follow its story. The two timelines make the father's role depend on memory as well as immediate action, with the adult children's experiences changing the meaning of the family's earlier life together.
The gallery records two separate public appearances, at Sundance in 2006 and in Berlin in 2007. These are photographs of Hutton rather than recreated scenes from his characters' lives. A route through his work can therefore begin with Ordinary People's intimate family conflict, continue through the contrasting film roles listed by AFI, and reach the group dynamics of Leverage and Hill House. Across those productions, the relationship between an individual and a troubled family or team remains a recurring dramatic setting.
Two independently photographed festival appearances, at Berlin and Sundance, documenting Hutton away from his fictional roles.
