Tessa Thompson has built a screen career that moves between independent drama, ensemble television and large-scale genre films. Her performances include Samantha White in Dear White People, Bianca in the Creed films, Charlotte Hale in Westworld and Valkyrie in Marvel's Thor films. Those parts offer strikingly different uses of authority: a student speaks into a microphone, a musician protects her ambitions, an executive negotiates power, and a warrior enters an extravagant comic universe. Thompson's work is worth following across those changes of setting rather than reducing it to a single franchise identity.
Theater forms an important part of her background. L.A. Theatre Works lists Shakespearean roles including Viola, Cordelia and Juliet, alongside work in Arcadia and Smart People. On television she appeared as Jackie Cook in Veronica Mars, while early film work included When a Stranger Calls. These credits place her later film breakthrough within an existing practice of stage and screen performance. They also provide useful context for the confidence with language and shifts of tone that recur in her subsequent roles, from intimate conversations to more heightened comic exchanges.
Creed is a rewarding entry point because Bianca has a creative life alongside the film's central boxing story. Playing opposite Michael B. Jordan, Thompson brings the musician's ambitions into a romance shaped by competing demands on time and attention. In an interview about the film, she discussed writing music and responding to Ryan Coogler's perspective on the Rocky world. For a rewatch, attend to the scenes away from the ring. Bianca's presence helps define what a life outside competition might mean, while keeping her own artistic priorities visible.
Dear White People and Selma both appeared in 2014, but required very different kinds of performance. Justin Simien's campus satire cast her as Samantha White; Ava DuVernay's historical drama cast her as civil-rights activist Diane Nash. The distinction matters: one character belongs to a fictional satirical argument, while the other represents a historical person. The films offer a useful pairing for viewers interested in how delivery, listening and ensemble relationships change with a work's form. Thompson's performance in the original Dear White People film should also be distinguished from the later television adaptation.
Genre work widened the range of her collaborators. In Westworld, Charlotte Hale places her inside a story about manufactured identities and institutional control. Thor: Ragnarok introduces Valkyrie within Taika Waititi's colorful action comedy, and later appearances continue the character. These are separate dramatic tasks, even when both involve characters who can exercise considerable power. The photographs in this gallery show Thompson discussing screen work at conventions in 2017 and 2019. The 2019 photograph concerns a Thor: Love and Thunder presentation; it is not a production still or a claim that the film opened that year.
Her filmography also includes Sorry to Bother You, Annihilation, Little Woods, Sylvie's Love and Passing. The latter two provide especially useful contrasts: Sylvie is a romantic lead, while Irene in Passing inhabits a more guarded social and psychological world. Looking across those films, viewers can follow how Thompson adjusts her physical ease, watchfulness and vocal energy to the demands of the story. The variety is itself the point of a career retrospective: no one mode of performance adequately describes the different work represented by these titles.
A practical viewing route begins with Dear White People, continues through Creed, and then turns toward Passing or Sylvie's Love before returning to a Thor film. That sequence moves between satire, sports drama, intimate period storytelling and comic spectacle. It also keeps the focus on complete performances rather than isolated famous scenes. The credited convention photographs document public career appearances at distinct moments; the selected role list broadens the guide beyond those events. Together they offer starting points for rediscovery without presenting the gallery as an exhaustive history of her work.
Two distinct convention photographs document Thompson in 2017 and at the 2019 Thor: Love and Thunder presentation. The dates identify the appearances.
