Ted Levine is an American character actor whose best-known roles place him on opposite sides of crime stories. He played Jame Gumb, known as Buffalo Bill, in The Silence of the Lambs, then became familiar to television audiences as Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in Monk. Those contrasting parts are only two points in a career extending from regional theatre to major films and long-running television. His filmography includes period drama, thrillers and comedy, with supporting roles that often establish a strong presence within an ensemble rather than placing him at its center.
Born in Bellaire, Ohio, on May 29, 1957, Levine attended Marlboro College in Vermont before pursuing theatre. Fandango's career account describes work with the Burlington Shakespeare Festival and his establishment of the Dratman Theatre Company in Ann Arbor. Chicago then became an important professional base, with work at Remains and Steppenwolf. His stage experience included the touring company of Biloxi Blues and a 1995 Steppenwolf production of Sam Shepard's Buried Child. Chicago Public Library's Steppenwolf archive independently preserves photographs naming him among that production's performers, documenting the theatrical strand of his career alongside his screen work.
Television viewers encountered Levine as Frank Holman in Crime Story during the 1980s. The Silence of the Lambs followed in 1991, making his performance as the murderer pursued by Clarice Starling particularly recognizable. Subsequent film work moved across a range of settings: Heat, The Fast and the Furious, The Manchurian Candidate, Memoirs of a Geisha and American Gangster all belong to his credits. The titles illustrate the breadth of his employment after that breakthrough, spanning crime films, political suspense and period storytelling. A single unsettling performance did not define the boundaries of his later career.
Monk, which ran from 2002 to 2009, gave him a sustained role as Stottlemeyer opposite Tony Shalhoub's Adrian Monk. The official episode guide explains the captain's complicated function: he needs Monk's extraordinary observational ability, but must also maintain his own authority and competence. He can be a supporter, a colleague and an obstacle within the same investigation. The guide credits Levine's performance with helping the character become warmer as the series developed. That relationship is central to the show's balance of crime-solving and comedy, allowing frustration and affection to coexist without making Stottlemeyer merely a foil.
The gallery photographs were taken at the Paley Center's December 2, 2008 event marking one hundred episodes of Monk. One shows Levine alone; the other places him between Jason Gray-Stanford and Tony Shalhoub. Paley's archive records a discussion of the approaching final season, the actors' continuing challenges and the show's relationship with its audience. The photographs therefore document a particular point near the end of the original series rather than a scene within it. Both are credited to Kristin Dos Santos, and each comes from a different original photograph of the same public occasion.
After Monk, Levine appeared as Lieutenant Hank Wade in FX's The Bridge, another police role in a different dramatic world. Later television credits include The Alienist and Big Sky, while films include Shutter Island and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Stottlemeyer also remained part of his career: Peacock's 2023 Mr. Monk's Last Case reunited Levine with Shalhoub, Gray-Stanford and Traylor Howard. Returning cast members resumed their established characters for a new investigation. That reunion connects the earlier ensemble with a later chapter, while his intervening projects show how much other work stood between the series and the film.
In 2026 Levine appeared as Boris in Netflix's Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, created by Haley Z. Boston. The cast guide identifies Boris as the groom Nicky's father and Victoria's husband, with Jennifer Jason Leigh playing Victoria. Levine describes the marriage as central to understanding his character, whose earlier severity has changed with age. The role adds a family-centered horror story to a career already rich in conflicting forms of authority. From stage ensembles to Stottlemeyer and Boris, his work provides opportunities to watch how a supporting character can shape the emotional and dramatic conditions around a lead.
A portrait and a distinct ensemble photograph document the 2008 Paley Center Monk event.
