Intro

Shelley Morrison was an American actress best known for two very different television comedy characters: Sister Sixto in The Flying Nun and Rosario Salazar in Will & Grace. Her career also included stage acting, theatrical production, film supporting roles and animation. The Television Academy records her birth in New York City on October 26, 1936, and her death on December 1, 2019. Her best-known later role arrived after decades of work, giving a new audience a reason to discover the performer behind an already extensive list of credits.

Career snapshot

Morrison studied acting at Los Angeles City College, where her classmates included James Coburn and Robert Vaughn. The Television Academy identifies Adventures in Paradise as her first screen assignment and lists later appearances in The Outer Limits, Gunsmoke, The Partridge Family, Murder, She Wrote and Columbo. Those guest roles involved moving among science fiction, westerns, comedy and mysteries. Recurring work in Laredo and Courthouse added another kind of continuity, while leaving room for assignments outside a single regular series or character.

The entry point

The biography preserved with her Common Ground interview describes substantial theatre experience before her later television fame. She performed in a national touring company of Tennessee Williams's Orpheus Descending and produced a West Coast presentation of Sweet Bird of Youth. Morrison's account of Los Angeles City College emphasizes taking whatever opportunities she could find. That mixture of acting and producing matters to her career: she participated in creating occasions for performance as well as accepting roles in productions organized by others.

Screen identity and style

On The Flying Nun, Morrison played Sister Sixto opposite Sally Field. The series ran from 1967 to 1970, and Sixto's difficulties with English supplied part of its comedy. Morrison later recalled drawing on relatives' affectionate and eccentric qualities when developing the character. The ensemble publicity photograph here places her at the back right, with Alejandro Rey behind Marge Redmond and Sally Field. It preserves the context of a supporting character working within a group, rather than representing Morrison as the series' title performer.

Collaborations and patterns

Rosario entered Will & Grace in 1999 and remained part of its original run through 2006. The character's exchanges with Megan Mullally's Karen Walker became a recurring feature of the comedy. In the biography archived with Common Ground, Morrison described Rosario as a favorite and valued portraying an older Hispanic woman who could stand her ground. She credited the creative environment provided by the writers and director James Burrows. Her account emphasizes the character's intelligence and the collaboration behind the performance, rather than treating Rosario only as a succession of sharp remarks.

Era reflection

Morrison's film appearances included Divorce American Style, How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life, Troop Beverly Hills and Fools Rush In. She also supplied the voice of Mrs. Portillo in Handy Manny, extending her work into children's animation. A brief Will & Grace reunion web video in 2016 was separate from the later network revival. She retired from acting and did not return as a regular performer for that revival. Keeping those productions separate avoids extending her original television credit simply because the series title returned to the schedule.

Legacy and rediscovery

The two gallery images document different aspects of Morrison's public career. Charles Bush's black-and-white portrait was supplied to Wikimedia with confirmed permission under a Creative Commons share-alike license; its capture date is not established. The Flying Nun ensemble image is an ABC publicity photograph with a press release dated August 3, 1967, identified by the archive as public domain in the United States. The portrait and cast photograph are distinct originals. Their credits retain the photographer, broadcaster, source records and date limitations without presenting an additional crop as another career image.
