Scott Grimes is an American actor and musician whose career connects childhood screen work, ensemble drama, animation and comedy. He played Donald Malarkey in Band of Brothers and Dr. Archie Morris in ER, while his voice became familiar as Steve Smith in American Dad! Later collaborations with Seth MacFarlane brought him into The Orville and the television series Ted. His recording career has developed alongside those screen credits, making singing a continuing part of his professional identity rather than a single diversion from acting.
Grimes grew up in Massachusetts and worked on screen while still young. His early credits include It Came Upon the Midnight Clear with Mickey Rooney and the creature features Critters and Critters 2: The Main Course. Television work expanded through guest appearances and series roles, including Will McCorkle in Party of Five. Those beginnings placed him in different kinds of productions before the large adult ensembles that later became central to his career. The two Critters films also gave horror audiences an early and enduring point of recognition.
In the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers, Grimes portrayed Donald Malarkey. The production brought him into a historical military ensemble, a very different setting from the hospital world of ER, where he played Archie Morris. Neither part should be confused with his later comic characters. Seen together, these credits show the range of professional environments in which he has worked: the sustained relationships of a medical series and the concentrated historical narrative of a miniseries each give an actor different ways to build a character over time.
American Dad! gave Grimes another kind of continuing role as the voice of Steve Smith. Voice performance places particular weight on timing, tone and rhythm, and the part also connects with his musical abilities. Disney's production biography notes his contribution of songs to the show. Other voice credits include Family Guy and Annoying Orange. The persistence of his animation work alongside live-action roles makes it possible for audiences to know his performances well without immediately connecting the voice to the actor seen in a drama or film.
The Orville cast Grimes as Lieutenant Gordon Malloy in a science-fiction ensemble led by Seth MacFarlane. Hulu describes the series as an exploration story set four centuries in the future, with the crew's interpersonal relationships sharing space with its voyages. Ted places him in a much more domestic setting as Matty Bennett, John Bennett's father, opposite Alanna Ubach as Susan. In a 2024 interview with TheWrap, Grimes discussed looking to All in the Family and Carroll O'Connor when developing Matty's loud but recognizable family presence.
Music has remained a parallel strand. Grimes released his self-titled debut album in 1989, followed by Livin' on the Run in 2005 and Drive in 2010. Sunset Blvd became a charting single. He has also performed with Band from TV, the charitable group of actors and television personalities, and worked musically with Russell Crowe. These activities extend the picture beyond his individual screen characters. They also help explain why music can feel integrated into his performances rather than appearing as an unrelated additional credit.
A retrospective can move from the young performer in Critters to the ensemble work of Band of Brothers and ER, then compare Steve Smith's voice with Gordon Malloy and Matty Bennett. This route highlights changes in medium and comic scale without treating one role as a complete account of his career. The gallery documents two convention appearances separated by many years, at Comic-Con in 2010 and WonderCon in 2026. Both are photographs of Grimes speaking in public, not images of the fictional characters listed here.
Two convention photographs document Grimes in 2010 and 2026. They depict the performer himself, not production stills.
