Rusty Hamer grew up in front of television audiences as Rusty Williams, the son of Danny Thomas's entertainer character on Make Room for Daddy, also known as The Danny Thomas Show. His part was a regular place in the household rather than a passing child guest appearance. The young actor could answer the adults with a sharp comic line and still remain recognizably a boy in a family. When the Williams family returned in Make Room for Granddaddy, viewers saw Hamer revisit that familiar identity as a young adult.
Born in Tenafly, New Jersey, on February 15, 1947, Hamer was named Russell Craig Hamer. His early performing experience included local stage work, and his family moved to Los Angeles before his screen career began. He appeared in the 1953 Western Fort Ti before television gave him his defining opportunity. Make Room for Daddy began in 1953 and continued until 1964. That long span occupied most of his childhood, making the eventual search for work beyond Rusty Williams a transition from an established public identity as well as from childhood to adulthood.
The series placed a working entertainer inside a domestic comedy. Hamer's Rusty was part of the family around Danny Williams, and the cast changed as the program developed. A January 1955 ABC photograph in this gallery pairs Hamer with Sherry Jackson, who played Terry Williams. A later CBS publicity photograph places him with Angela Cartwright and guest Milton Berle. These are different moments in the show's history, with different performers surrounding him; the photographs should not be read as one unchanging family cast or as scenes from his feature films.
An archival episode provides a more precise view of that television company. The Paley Center lists Hamer as Rusty in The Bob Hope Show, broadcast on CBS on January 6, 1958. Danny Thomas plays Danny Williams, Marjorie Lord is Kathy, Angela Cartwright is Linda, and Mary Wickes appears as Liz O'Neill, with Hope playing himself. Sheldon Leonard produced and directed the installment, written by Jack Elinson and Charles Stewart. Those credits place Hamer within a professional comedy ensemble that joined the regular family to a visiting entertainment personality, a useful setting for his quick exchanges with adult performers.
Hamer also worked alongside another established comedy partnership in Charles Barton's 1956 feature Dance with Me, Henry. AFI identifies his character as Duffer, one of the children cared for by Lou Costello's Lou Henry. Bud Abbott plays Bud Flick, Gigi Perreau plays Shelley, and Mary Wickes is the inspecting social worker Miss Mayberry. The story moves between the children's home, an orphanage and the Kiddyland carnival, where the adults become entangled with criminals. Duffer's place in that story is distinct from Rusty Williams: Hamer brings a child performer to a feature comedy built around Abbott and Costello, rather than simply carrying his television surname into a film.
After the original series ended, Hamer returned to Rusty Williams in reunion projects and in The Joey Bishop Show. A guest appearance on Green Acres offered a different character. Make Room for Granddaddy then brought the Williams family back as a weekly series in 1970–1971, with Rusty now a married medical student. The 1970 ABC cast portrait shows Hamer at the back left, alongside Cartwright and Thomas, with Michael Hughes and Lord in front. The sequel lasted one season, and it did not establish a sustained new phase of screen employment for him.
Hamer eventually lived in Louisiana and worked outside entertainment. He died on January 18, 1990, at the age of 42. His death helped prompt former child performer Paul Petersen's advocacy through A Minor Consideration, connecting his story to support for young actors and their lives after early fame. His television work had already been recognized with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960. Revisiting that work means seeing both the child comedian who could hold a scene with experienced stars and the adult whose career cannot be reduced to the continuing popularity of one childhood role.
Three distinct publicity photographs follow Hamer from the original Williams household to its adult-family sequel. Group photographs identify his position explicitly.
