Roger Ashton-Griffiths was already a well-established character actor when he joined Game of Thrones as Mace Tyrell. His earlier career had taken him from music and opera into films, television and the theatre, often in supporting parts within elaborate period or fantasy worlds. The range includes a detective in Young Sherlock Holmes, a shopkeeper in Bright Star and a doctor in The Lobster. Away from acting, he has pursued visual art, fiction and academic writing. The photographs here include both public appearances and a licensed image of him in a specific film costume.
Born in Hertfordshire on January 19, 1957, Ashton-Griffiths studied music at Lancaster University, graduating in 1978 as a member of Furness College. He then performed with English National Opera from 1979 to 1981 before building his acting career. His stage credits include Gloucester in King Lear and Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, roles that draw on different theatrical traditions. Lancaster has continued to document his connection with the university, including alumni appearances and his later return to the city for film work. Music was the starting point of a career that subsequently crossed several forms of performance.
A cluster of film credits in 1985 illustrates how early he became part of British screen ensembles. He played Lestrade in Young Sherlock Holmes, a priest in Brazil, a radio producer in Plenty and Reverend Duckworth in Dreamchild. Those are separate supporting roles rather than variations of one continuing character. Later credits include Gangs of New York, The Madness of King George and The Wind in the Willows. The latter two also appear in British Comedy Guide's records, which identify his roles as an MP and the prosecution counsel respectively. His work repeatedly placed him inside distinctive fictional social worlds.
Jane Campion's Bright Star, released in 2009, offered a more intimate period setting around John Keats and Fanny Brawne, played by Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish. The BFI's cast record credits Ashton-Griffiths as a shopkeeper. The original record for the costume photograph reproduced here identifies the character as Jasper Shaw, the bookseller, and dates the photograph to May 2008. That distinction matters: the photograph documents the production period, while the film's release belongs to the following year. The image shows the actor outside a bookseller's frontage rather than at a modern publicity event.
Game of Thrones introduced him as Lord Mace Tyrell in its fourth season. The television appearance record runs from The Lion and the Rose in April 2014 through The Winds of Winter in June 2016, encompassing seasons four, five and six. Mace is the father of Margaery Tyrell, and the role brought Ashton-Griffiths into another densely populated dramatic ensemble. His screen work continued beyond that series: British Comedy Guide records him as the doctor in The Lobster, a musician in The Death of Stalin and the Bishop of Lambeth in Quacks. These credits span feature-film satire and television comedy as well as fantasy drama.
Writing and study form another substantial part of his working life. He earned a master's degree in fine art at the University of East London and undertook doctoral work at the University of East Anglia. The thesis available through UEA combines a critical essay on English fiction about South Asia with a novel, Hanging On, concerning a Sri Lankan family in England. Its abstract examines changes in colonial and postcolonial literary perspectives. His debut published novel, The Case of Cat Adam, followed in 2023. These projects belong alongside his acting rather than being fictional accomplishments borrowed from one of his characters.
In July 2025 Lancaster University reported his return to the city to lead the cast of the short film The Premiere, alongside fellow graduate Nicola Harrison and other participants connected with the university. The project filmed at Lancaster Grand Theatre and addressed power and accountability in the film industry. That return links his professional work with the institution where he studied music decades earlier. The gallery brings together the 2008 Bright Star costume photograph, Gage Skidmore's image at Nashville's 2017 Con of Thrones and a 2023 self-portrait. Each has its own source and rights record, reflecting different settings in a continuing creative career.
A film costume photograph, convention appearance and self-portrait document three distinct settings.
