Intro

Richard Schiff is an actor whose continuing television roles include Toby Ziegler in The West Wing and Dr. Aaron Glassman in The Good Doctor. His career also encompasses film ensembles and theater, both as a performer and a director. These different settings are worth keeping in view: a White House communications director and a physician mentoring a younger colleague provide familiar entry points, but they represent only part of a working life that began in the New York theater community.

Career snapshot

ABC’s career biography records his founding of the Manhattan Repertory Theater, where he served as artistic director, and his direction of Antigone with Angela Bassett. He completed a theater degree at City College of New York and later performed with Tim Robbins’ Actors’ Gang. His screen credits include The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Ray and I Am Sam. The mixture of directing, stage performance and film work explains why a biography centered only on his most recognizable television characters would leave out important parts of his preparation and range.

The entry point

The West Wing made Toby Ziegler a sustained television role within a large ensemble. Schiff’s Television Academy oral-history interview discusses his work with creator Aaron Sorkin, director Thomas Schlamme and fellow cast members, as well as the character’s development over the series. The Academy’s awards record confirms a supporting-actor drama Emmy in 2000 and further nominations in 2001 and 2002. The distinction matters: these are three nominations including one win, rather than three separate victories or an award for the series as a whole.

Screen identity and style

In a later Television Academy interview, Schiff recalled the shared pleasure of the 2000 awards night, when colleagues also won. He connected that feeling to the long hours and collective effort of making the show. That recollection offers a useful perspective on ensemble performance. A character may be remembered for particular speeches or reactions, while the actor’s account places those moments within sustained collaboration. Watching Toby in conversation with the other White House staff can reveal how much of the role depends on the rhythm of those exchanges.

Collaborations and patterns

The Good Doctor brought Schiff together with Freddie Highmore as Glassman and Shaun Murphy. In the same interview, Schiff emphasized the relationship’s mentor and father-figure dimensions and the importance of supporting an outsider. His comments locate the role in a personal bond rather than only in the hospital’s hierarchy. The contrast with Toby is instructive: both characters inhabit professional institutions, but Glassman’s relationship with Shaun gives viewers another way to follow responsibility, loyalty and the strain of wanting another person to succeed.

Era reflection

His stage work includes George Aaronow in the Broadway revival of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross. The production program lists Daniel Sullivan as director and Al Pacino, Bobby Cannavale, David Harbour, John C. McGinley and Jeremy Shamos among the company. A theater program supplies a precise record of that collaboration and role. It also places Schiff in a live ensemble whose exchanges unfold in a shared room, an interesting companion to television work where the final scene is assembled through camera coverage and editing.

Legacy and rediscovery

The photographs show Schiff speaking at Oxford in 2009 and attending the Knife Fight premiere at Tribeca in 2012. They document different public occasions, not performances as Toby or Glassman. For a return to his work, those two television characters provide a strong starting comparison, while his film and theater credits widen the view. His oral history also preserves reflections on early television appearances and returning to theater, allowing the familiar screen presence to be understood as part of a career developed across several forms.
