Regina King is an American actress and director whose work connects television comedy, police drama, animation and feature filmmaking. Her roles include Brenda Jenkins in 227, Detective Lydia Adams in Southland and Sharon Rivers in If Beale Street Could Talk. The last of those brought an Academy Award for supporting actress in 2019. Her directing work, including One Night in Miami, adds another perspective to a career that has developed across several decades and across both sides of the camera.
King became familiar to television audiences through 227, playing Brenda Jenkins in the NBC sitcom. The role belongs to an early period of a career that later included the feature film Jerry Maguire and a wide range of television drama. For viewers who know her through Watchmen or her Oscar-winning performance, the sitcom offers a useful earlier point of reference. The contrast is a reminder that an actor's best-known dramatic work can follow years of experience in a different television format and ensemble.
Southland cast King as Detective Lydia Adams. The Television Academy's biography identifies the series as one of the Peabody-winning programs associated with her career. Her other Peabody-winning television work includes The Boondocks, in which she supplied the voices of Huey and Riley Freeman. Those are two distinct animated characters, not a live-action appearance. Moving between a police drama and voice performance makes a useful comparison for viewers interested in the different ways a performer establishes a character through presence, dialogue and sound.
King's television awards include Emmy wins for American Crime, Seven Seconds and Watchmen. The Television Academy records her fourth Emmy in 2020 for Watchmen, where she played Angela Abar. The awards mark particular performances within a much broader body of work. A viewing route can follow the named programs rather than treating the trophies as a substitute for the performances themselves. Each series creates a different dramatic world, so the roles should be considered in their own stories rather than merged into a single screen persona.
In Barry Jenkins's If Beale Street Could Talk, adapted from James Baldwin, King plays Sharon Rivers, the mother of Tish. A contemporary PBS interview identifies the character and discusses the family's support within the film's story. The Academy's 2019 ceremony record confirms King's supporting-actress win. The film is an important point of entry because it places her within an intimate family drama, offering a contrast with both the procedural setting of Southland and the speculative world of Watchmen without requiring viewers to know those series first.
King directed One Night in Miami, a fictionalized account of an encounter involving Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown. The distributor identifies her as the film's director, a credit distinct from acting in the ensemble. She later starred as Shirley Chisholm in John Ridley's Shirley, a project announced by Netflix with King's Royal Ties Productions among its production partners. These works connect her career to historical subjects while making different creative demands: one through directing a dramatic ensemble, the other through portraying a public figure.
An introduction to King's work can move from 227 to Southland, add The Boondocks for a voice-performance contrast, and continue with If Beale Street Could Talk and One Night in Miami. This is a selected viewing route rather than a complete filmography. The gallery records a 2018 Comic-Con appearance and a 2013 Peabody Awards group scene. King appears near the right of the latter photograph in a patterned dress. Both images document public events and are credited to their photographers; neither is presented as a scene from a fictional production.
