Paul McGrath was an American actor whose career crossed the stage, radio and television. His work as the host of Inner Sanctum connects him with mystery storytelling, while family comedies such as A Date with Judy and My Son Jeep reveal another side of his broadcasting career. These are distinct programmes with different roles, rather than variations on a single character. McGrath also maintained a substantial Broadway record, making the theatre an essential part of any account of the performer whose voice became familiar to radio audiences.
McGrath was born in Chicago on April 11, 1904. The Broadway League's database documents a career that continued into 1970, including appearances in A Girl Can Tell, The Gang's All Here and A Case of Libel. Those entries identify individual stage characters and productions, rather than merely listing him as a broadcaster. Following the theatre record alongside the radio work gives a clearer sense of his professional range. It also helps distinguish this American performer from other public figures who share the name Paul McGrath.
A Date with Judy began on radio in 1941 as a comedy centred on teenager Judy Foster and the people around her. McGrath played her father, Melvin Foster, while Margaret Brayton played her mother, Dora. The NBC photograph in the gallery is dated July 1, 1941, and shows the two performers together beside a studio microphone. That production context matters: the photograph documents the radio cast, not the cast of the later feature film or a television adaptation carrying the same title.
My Son Jeep placed McGrath in another family comedy as Dr. Allison. The Old Radio Times account identifies Donald Cook as the earlier performer in the role and McGrath as his successor. The series returned to radio on CBS in the mid-1950s, and the surviving publicity image groups McGrath with Bobby Alford and Joan Lazer. Alford played Jeep and Lazer played Peggy. The photograph's release does not establish an exact year; its caption associates it with the CBS radio period of 1955–1956, which is the range retained here.
Inner Sanctum offers a different route into McGrath's work. The 1954 television anthology credits him as the voice of Your Host, with House Jameson also taking that function in the series. A host's task differs from playing the central character in each mystery: the voice introduces the story and establishes a relationship with the audience before the episode's action unfolds. When exploring the programme, listen for that framing role. It is separate from McGrath's family-comedy fathers and from the changing characters played by the anthology's guest casts.
The gallery's two photographs preserve the visible side of a career often experienced through sound. In the My Son Jeep image, McGrath sits in the middle of the group, smiling toward the boy at his left while Lazer sits at the right. In the earlier A Date with Judy portrait, he stands behind Brayton with one hand beside the prominent NBC microphone. Both images are publicity photographs of performers associated with radio roles. They are not pictures of McGrath's own family, and their captions identify the colleagues shown with him.
McGrath died in London on April 13, 1978. His career invites listeners and viewers to connect several kinds of performance without collapsing their differences. The theatre credits preserve work created for a live audience; the radio comedies depend on voices and imagined settings; Inner Sanctum uses a narrator to lead into a televised story. Begin with one of those familiar titles and follow the others to discover a broader working life. The credited photographs provide two concrete points of reference while keeping the original broadcast medium clear.
Two radio publicity photographs show McGrath with his fellow cast members. The captions distinguish these radio productions from film and television adaptations.
