Patrick Duffy's television career connects three very different kinds of weekly entertainment: the aquatic adventure of Man from Atlantis, the family rivalries of Dallas and the domestic comedy of Step by Step. Bobby Ewing remains his defining dramatic role, but looking across those programs reveals an actor comfortable providing a steady center for an ensemble. He has also directed television and returned to live theatre, extending a career built on more than one enduring character.
Duffy grew up in Montana before moving with his family to Seattle. He completed the University of Washington's Professional Actors Training Program in 1971. His own biography describes a difficult period in New York, followed by a move to Los Angeles and carpentry and delivery work while seeking acting jobs. Man from Atlantis provided the major break: as Mark Harris, he became the unusual hero at the center of a science-fiction adventure.
Dallas makes a strong entry point because Bobby is woven into the Ewing family's continuing conflicts rather than introduced as a solitary hero. The original series began in 1978, and Duffy later returned for the continuation. The Paley Center's 2013 event placed him alongside Linda Gray and the younger cast, documenting how the revived drama joined established characters to a new generation. Watch how his scenes establish family history without requiring every feeling to be announced aloud.
Duffy often gives a scene a reassuring surface, which makes moments of frustration or disappointment more noticeable. Compare Bobby's exchanges in Dallas with the broader timing of Step by Step. A serial drama can leave a disagreement unsettled for another episode; a family sitcom needs reactions and comic reversals to register quickly. As a viewing exercise, notice how he adjusts a pause or a look for each format while retaining an approachable screen presence.
Long-running series also gave Duffy experience on the other side of the camera. Hallmark's biography credits him with directing thirty Dallas episodes and forty-nine episodes of Step by Step, where he starred opposite Suzanne Somers. That combination of acting and directing makes his television work useful to revisit as ensemble storytelling. Look beyond the lead performance to the placement of reaction shots and the room allowed for another actor to finish a comic or dramatic beat.
His later work includes Stephen Logan on The Bold and the Beautiful and Bruce in Hallmark's The Christmas Cure. He also returned to stage acting, including Art in London's West End and a UK tour of Catch Me If You Can with Linda Purl. These credits reconnect the television performer with his theatrical training. They offer a reminder that a familiar face on weekly television can have a working life beyond the roles most frequently repeated in syndication.
Duffy revisited Man from Atlantis in a novel published in 2016, extending his connection to the character in a different medium. For a compact career tour, start with Mark Harris, move to Bobby Ewing and then sample Step by Step before a later television film. The photographs below distinguish a genuine 1977 publicity image from later public appearances. Together they trace changing career contexts without presenting a reunion photograph as a scene from Dallas.
