Intro

Mindy Sterling is an American actress and comedian whose performances include Frau Farbissina in the Austin Powers films, Principal Susan Skidmore in A.N.T. Farm and the voice of Lin Beifong in The Legend of Korra. A member of the Groundlings comedy community, she has worked across feature films, television, animation and short-form series. Her recognizable comic characters often occupy positions of authority, but the productions surrounding them range from broad spy parody to children's comedy and animated adventure. That range has brought her work to several generations of viewers.

Career snapshot

Sterling's connection to the Groundlings is central to her account of becoming a comic performer. In her Classic Conversations interview, she discussed the path from improvisation to working with Mike Myers, including workshops that preceded Austin Powers. The Los Angeles company provided a setting for character work and collaboration, and Sterling continued to be associated with its performers after establishing a screen career. Her early television work included The Larry Sanders Show, while later assignments expanded the audience for an approach developed through live comedy and improvisation.

The entry point

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery introduced Frau Farbissina in 1997. Sterling returned in The Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember, making the severe-looking member of Dr. Evil's organization a continuing presence across the trilogy. The character's clipped delivery and sudden forceful interruptions fit the films' exaggerated treatment of spy-movie villains. Sterling's performance is also a useful reminder that the series' comedy depends on the surrounding company as well as Myers's central roles: reactions, arguments and interruptions help establish the absurd working life of Dr. Evil's organization.

Screen identity and style

Drop Dead Gorgeous offered another kind of ensemble comedy in 1999, using a fictional beauty pageant and a mock-documentary format. In a 2018 interview before a university screening, Sterling recalled the film's continued following and expressed pleasure at being invited to discuss it. She also connected the project with writer Lona Williams's Groundlings background. Her recollections emphasize the experience of working within an eccentric company, including Kirstie Alley, and the way a film can develop an audience well beyond its original release. How the Grinch Stole Christmas added a very different fantasy setting to her film work.

Collaborations and patterns

On television, Sterling became familiar as Francine Briggs in iCarly and Susan Skidmore in A.N.T. Farm. She also appeared in Desperate Housewives and played Linda Schwartz on The Goldbergs. Animation offered a separate use for her voice, including Lin Beifong in The Legend of Korra and work on Chowder and other series. These assignments should not be collapsed into one comic type: a school authority figure, a sitcom neighbor and an animated police chief operate within different stories, even when viewers recognize the performer connecting them.

Era reflection

In Con Man, Sterling played Bobbie, the talent coordinator around Alan Tudyk's struggling convention-circuit actor. Speaking to Lena Lamoray in 2017, she described Bobbie as inappropriate and self-involved, with a professional relationship that also serves her own appetite for attention. The same year brought Emmy nominations for that performance and for Shirla in secs & EXECS, both in the short-form actress category. The Television Academy's record confirms the latter nomination. The two roles extended her screen comedy into productions built for shorter episodes and online audiences.

Legacy and rediscovery

Sterling's career can be followed through recurring collaborations as well as signature characters. Groundlings connections, ensemble films, children's television and voice acting each form a substantial part of that record. The two photographs in this gallery show separate San Diego Comic-Con appearances in 2015 and 2016, documenting public events rather than scenes or costumes from her fictional roles. For viewers arriving through Frau Farbissina, Con Man and Drop Dead Gorgeous offer other comic settings, while The Legend of Korra reveals a different performance through voice alone.
