Intro

Mekia Cox is an actress and dancer whose career connects musical theatre, television drama and concert performance. Her screen roles include Nyla Harper in The Rookie, Robin Charles in Chicago Med and Princess Tiana in Once Upon a Time. Audiences who know her as a forceful police officer may therefore discover a considerably wider performance background. Dance and stage work are part of that history, alongside roles in contemporary dramas and fantasy. Her career offers several ways to explore how a performer adapts to different kinds of ensemble and different relationships with an audience.

Career snapshot

Cox grew up with performance as a central interest, beginning in Saint Croix before her family moved to the Orlando area. She studied musical theatre at Florida State University and toured in Fame and Smokey Joe's Cafe. In interviews she has described planning a stage career in New York, only to find that auditions during a stay in Los Angeles led to screen work. The change was a professional turn rather than an abandonment of her earlier training. Movement, musical timing and the experience of performing for a live audience remained part of her background.

The entry point

Her early television work included One Tree Hill, CSI: NY and Bones, followed by roles across comedy and drama. She played Sasha in 90210 and gained her first series-regular assignment on Undercovers. Film work included Crazy, Stupid, Love and a place among the dancers in Michael Jackson's This Is It. These credits make a broad viewing map: a television character, a supporting film appearance and a recorded concert rehearsal are different kinds of work. The dance credit in particular should not be mistaken for a fictional character within a conventional narrative film.

Screen identity and style

Chicago Med cast Cox as Dr. Robin Charles, an epidemiologist and the daughter of Dr. Daniel Charles, played by Oliver Platt. In a 2017 interview she described Robin's professional interest in investigating disease and the personal complications surrounding her father and Dr. Connor Rhodes. That combination gives the character both a medical function and relationships outside the immediate case. For viewers approaching Cox through The Rookie, Robin offers a useful contrast: expertise and authority remain present, but the character operates within a hospital and a different family dynamic.

Collaborations and patterns

Cox also portrayed Princess Tiana in Once Upon a Time. The role places her within that series' live-action reinterpretation of familiar fairy-tale figures; it is separate from the voice performance in Disney's animated The Princess and the Frog. Her other television experience included Mob City, which she singled out in her 2017 interview for the opportunity to work in a period setting with Frank Darabont. The contrast between a fairy-tale character and a historical crime-drama environment is another reminder of how widely the surrounding world can change an actor's assignment.

Era reflection

Nyla Harper joined The Rookie in its second season, bringing an undercover background into her work as a training officer. Cox has discussed the unusual challenge of playing a character who herself sometimes performs an invented identity. In those scenes, the task is not simply to become someone new: traces of Harper must remain beneath the cover persona. That observation supplies a specific rewatch question for the performance. It also helps explain why a continuing role can remain demanding across seasons, as new situations reveal additional layers of an established character.

Legacy and rediscovery

The photographs here show Cox in a 2007 portrait and at San Diego Comic-Con in 2026. The portrait predates several of her best-known television roles, while the panel image records a later public appearance with the audience for her screen work. Neither is a production still or an image of a fictional character. A career introduction can pair Robin Charles with Nyla Harper, then turn to her dance work to see another aspect of her performance training. The range is clearest when the individual roles and their distinct contexts remain visible.
