Martin Short is a Canadian actor and comedian whose career connects sketch television, feature films, musical theater and character comedy. SCTV and Saturday Night Live introduced many viewers to his highly individual comic creations, while films such as Three Amigos and Father of the Bride brought him into different ensembles. More recently, Only Murders in the Building paired him with Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. His career rewards looking across formats, because a recurring sketch character, a supporting film role and a stage musical use different aspects of his performance.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Short became associated with SCTV before joining Saturday Night Live. The Television Academy records an early Emmy for his work on SCTV's writing team. His recurring characters included Ed Grimley and Nathan Thurm, figures with their own voices, gestures and social anxieties. These sketches are a useful introduction to his character-based comedy. Rather than depending on a long narrative, each establishes a recognizable person quickly and then develops a comic situation around that personality's particular habits.
Short's feature work included Three Amigos, Innerspace, Three Fugitives, Clifford and Mars Attacks. The movies place him within a variety of comic and fantastic worlds. Their ensembles also provide a contrast with solo or short-form television appearances: a film role has to function within a larger story shared with other actors. An introductory selection can therefore move between one of the ensemble films and a sketch performance, following how the scale and duration of a scene change the possibilities for a comic character.
In Father of the Bride, Short played Franck, the wedding planner, and returned to the role in Father of the Bride Part II. The part is one of the clear links between his film work and his collaborations with Steve Martin. Their later appearances together belong to different projects, but comparing them shows an enduring professional partnership across changing stories. Franck remains a particular fictional person within the wedding comedies; the character should not be confused with the performer or with his later television roles.
Musical theater is another substantial part of Short's career. He appeared in The Goodbye Girl and won the 1999 Tony Award for leading actor in a musical for Little Me. He also co-wrote and starred in Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. The Broadway record gives these stage productions their own chronology, apart from film and television. For viewers familiar mainly with his screen comedy, the theater credits add the context of live singing, movement and sustained performance before an audience.
Short's television career includes the interview parody Primetime Glick and a dramatic role as lawyer Leonard Winstone in Damages. Only Murders in the Building later cast him as Oliver Putnam alongside Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. The series places its central trio within an ongoing mystery-comedy ensemble. Together these credits demonstrate different uses of character performance: an invented interviewer, a lawyer in a drama, and a continuing comic protagonist each occupy their own narrative setting and relationship to the audience.
A compact career route can combine SCTV sketches, Father of the Bride and Only Murders in the Building, with the stage record supplying a parallel history. This selection is an introduction rather than a complete inventory. The gallery includes an archival interview photograph whose event year is not established here, plus a 1989 Governors Ball image with Amy Irving. Both show Short at public events. The captions preserve that distinction and retain the photographers' credits, avoiding the suggestion that an upload date establishes when an older photograph was taken.
