Martha Howe-Douglas is an English actress and writer whose television work includes Doctors, Horrible Histories, Yonderland and Ghosts. Her career brings together everyday characters and extravagant comic transformations: Donna Parmar works in a medical practice, Debbie Maddox crosses into a puppet-populated fantasy world, and Lady Fanny Button insists on old standards in a house she continues to inhabit after death. Howe-Douglas is also one of the creators behind the latter two series, sharing writing and performance responsibilities with the colleagues who became the Them There collective.
Her professional training was at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, whose graduate record confirms that she completed its acting degree in 2003. Early television appearances included a receptionist in The Office Christmas special. In 2006 and 2007 she played Donna Parmar in the BBC daytime drama Doctors, a continuing role that placed her within the daily business and relationships of the surgery. Later credits include Abigail Fenton in WPC 56 and Becky in Doctor Foster. Those appearances provide a parallel dramatic strand to the comedy work for which many viewers subsequently came to know her.
Horrible Histories required a much more changeable screen identity. Howe-Douglas performed numerous roles across the original five-series run, joining an ensemble whose historical sketches mixed elaborate costumes with deliberately modern comic attitudes. HD Management's profile identifies that sustained run as a central part of her career. The working partnership continued beyond the sketch programme: Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, Ben Willbond and Howe-Douglas developed new projects together. Their familiarity with each other's performances became part of how those later shows were conceived, written and acted.
In Yonderland, Howe-Douglas took the central role of Debbie Maddox, a mother whose kitchen cupboard opens a route into an extraordinary world. In her first-series interview, she described Debbie as someone who has become confined by the labels of wife and mother, with the adventures gradually giving her renewed confidence. The character provides a human point of reference among the strange inhabitants and their competing demands. Howe-Douglas initially wanted to play additional parts too, but came to enjoy concentrating on Debbie. That continuity was a significant change from the rapid succession of figures in Horrible Histories.
Making the fantasy series also changed her responsibilities behind the scenes. Speaking in 2014, she described the anxiety of presenting a project the group had created themselves, rather than simply arriving as hired performers. Playing the lead increased that sense of responsibility. The practical work had its own complications: scenes had to be arranged around puppeteers who remained out of the camera's view, sometimes working immediately beside the actors' feet. At the time of that interview she was also filming Bill in York, another collaboration with the ensemble, using an invented Shakespeare adventure as its comic starting point.
Ghosts, first broadcast in 2019, offered a sharp contrast to Debbie. Howe-Douglas plays Lady Fanny Button, whose blunt judgments and attachment to the house's past make her a forceful presence among its supernatural residents. In the series-two cast interview, she explained the pleasure of playing someone so unlike herself and so unwilling to filter an opinion. The writers had considered playing many roles, but a principal character for each performer allowed greater depth. Lady Button's relationship with the living Alison consequently becomes more than an endless repetition of disapproval: their differences can also produce attachment and understanding.
The television version of Ghosts concluded at Christmas 2023 after five series, establishing Lady Button as one of Howe-Douglas's most recognisable characters. Her path through these programmes shows different kinds of ensemble work: maintaining a place in a continuing drama, changing identities in sketches, carrying a fantasy story and helping write a sitcom around a permanent group of personalities. The gallery records two separate public appearances rather than costume stills. Jonathan Bowen photographed her signing books at the reopened Abingdon County Hall Museum in 2012; DavidPMaynard photographed her at London's Comic Con in 2025.
Two independently photographed public appearances, from 2012 and 2025, accompany the career account. Neither is presented as a production still.
