Maisie Williams is a British actress associated with Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, the voice of Goona in Early Man and Catherine Dior in The New Look. These roles span fantasy television, stop-motion animation and historical drama. They also offer three different ways to encounter her work: a character developed across a long series, a voice shaped for an animated world, and a performance informed by research into a real person. Her career is broader than the role that first made her widely recognizable.
Williams grew up professionally within Game of Thrones. Speaking to Sky News in 2018, while the final series was being made, she described the production as the industry she had known through much of her youth. She felt ready for the chapter to end while expecting to miss it. That account gives the lengthy commitment a personal context without treating Arya as a portrait of the actress. The Television Academy records supporting-actress Emmy nominations for the performance in 2016 and 2019.
Arya is the useful entry point for this page, but an awards record is only one part of understanding the performance. A continuing role requires an actor to carry an audience's memory of earlier scenes into new situations. Viewers can follow changes in bearing, responses and relationships over time. Williams's two nominations recognize work in the same drama series at different stages; they are not two different characters or acting wins. Her later work offers a way to compare that continuity with a much more concentrated dramatic assignment.
In Early Man, Williams supplied the voice of Goona, a Bronze Age footballer who helps train a team of cave people. She told Sky News that Aardman's approach to individual characters appealed to her, particularly its freedom from narrow expectations about women. The role's athletic competence is central to the story rather than an incidental decorative quality. Voice acting adds another dimension to the comparison with Arya: the audience hears the performer through a character whose movements and expressions are created through animation, a collaboration across distinct crafts.
The New Look cast Williams as Catherine Dior, sister of Christian Dior, played by Ben Mendelsohn. Apple's announcement identifies Todd A. Kessler as the creator of the ten-episode series, filmed in Paris and set against the upheaval of the Second World War. Its ensemble includes Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel, John Malkovich as Lucien Lelong and Glenn Close as Carmel Snow. Williams's part therefore sits within a larger account of fashion and survival, while retaining a family relationship at the center of Catherine's scenes.
For Catherine, a French Resistance member and concentration-camp survivor, Williams researched Justine Picardie's Miss Dior. In a 2024 interview with TheWrap, she described the challenge of conveying experiences that the character could struggle to articulate. She also discussed the satisfaction of portraying recovery. Costume designer Karen Muller Serreau gradually returned color to Catherine's wardrobe, and director Jeremy Podeswa, who had previously worked with Williams on Game of Thrones, directed the final two episodes. These details connect performance to research, clothing and the shaping of individual scenes.
A useful viewing sequence places Arya, Goona and Catherine alongside one another without assuming their different worlds make them interchangeable. One performance has the accumulated history of a fantasy series, another works through animated comedy, and another draws on a documented life. The gallery below preserves separate public-appearance photographs from 2015 and 2013, with their creators and licenses credited. They show Williams as a working performer rather than as any of these characters; keeping that distinction visible helps the photographs complement the career record without pretending to be production stills.
Separate convention and premiere photographs document Williams outside her fictional roles.
