Madeline Brewer is an American actress whose television work includes Orange Is the New Black, Hemlock Grove and The Handmaid's Tale. Her portrayal of Janine in the latter series brought an Emmy nomination in 2021. Film and stage work broaden that television record, including the psychological thriller Cam and the role of Sally Bowles in Cabaret in London. These projects offer different ways into her career: a recurring ensemble part, a central film performance and a live musical each frame the actor's work differently.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Pitman, New Jersey, Brewer studied musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York. She also trained as a singer. Her agency biography records that she took the leading role in the world premiere of Liberty: The Musical after graduation. That stage background is useful context for a performer often associated with television drama. It places singing and live performance within her professional development rather than treating later musical-theater work as an unrelated departure.
Brewer made her television debut as Tricia Miller in Orange Is the New Black. She subsequently played Miranda Cates in Hemlock Grove and appeared in other television projects including Grimm. These early credits placed her within established ensembles and distinct fictional worlds. A viewer tracing the career can begin with those supporting and recurring characters before turning to the longer association with The Handmaid's Tale. Doing so makes the progression of assignments visible without assuming that all of the characters share the same dramatic purpose.
The Handmaid's Tale cast Brewer as Janine in its adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel. The Television Academy lists her 2021 nomination for supporting actress in a drama series for that role. Janine became a sustained television assignment, with the character's relationships developing within the show's larger ensemble. The performance can be followed across the story rather than reduced to an awards moment. A comparison with her earlier television work also shows how a continuing role gives an actor time to reveal different responses to changing circumstances.
Cam offered Brewer a central feature-film role as Alice, also known by her online name Lola. The part provides a different viewing context from an ensemble television series: the feature concentrates attention on one character and the threat to her identity. Her film work also includes The Ultimate Playlist of Noise, opposite Keean Johnson, and Space Oddity, directed by Kyra Sedgwick. Those titles expand an introductory selection beyond the best-known series while retaining a clear distinction between each film's character, genre and surrounding cast.
Brewer played Sally Bowles in the London production of Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre opposite Callum Scott Howells. The stage role reconnects with her musical-theater training and singing background. She later joined You as Bronte in its fifth season, appearing opposite Penn Badgley. Moving between a live musical and a psychological television story illustrates the variety of settings in which she has worked. The two parts are separate characters, with their own narrative functions and their own relationships to the other performers.
An introductory path can combine Orange Is the New Black, The Handmaid's Tale and Cam, then add You or the record of her Cabaret engagement. This is a selected career guide rather than an exhaustive filmography. The gallery documents a 2014 ATX appearance and a separate 2019 Toronto festival red-carpet scene. Brewer is the red-haired woman near the center of the latter image, which retains the surrounding event activity. Both photographs show public appearances and carry individual acknowledgments rather than being presented as production stills.
