Madelaine Petsch is an American actress whose breakthrough as Cheryl Blossom in Riverdale developed into a film career with a strong interest in suspense and horror. Cheryl's theatrical confidence made her a distinctive presence in the television ensemble, while Sightless and The Strangers: Chapter 1 placed Petsch at the center of more concentrated stories of danger. Her work also extends into romantic comedy. These different settings make it useful to separate the performer from the instantly recognizable appearance and manner of her best-known television character.
Before Riverdale, Petsch appeared in projects including The Hive and Instant Mom. The CW series, which ran from 2017 to 2023, gave her a much larger and more sustained role. Its reinterpretation of the Archie Comics world combines school relationships with mystery and increasingly heightened storytelling. Cheryl belongs to that particular adaptation, where family history and personal longing complicate her public authority. The character's place in the ensemble develops through her relationships with the others rather than through the queen-bee label alone.
Cheryl is the natural entry point into Petsch's career. The CW's biography identifies her as Riverdale's resident queen bee, but a rewatch can look beyond the confident entrances and sharp lines to the situations in which that confidence is tested. Her relationship with Toni Topaz, played by Vanessa Morgan, is one important part of the series' emotional landscape. Petsch has to sustain a recognizable character while the surrounding story changes tone, balancing the heightened presentation with reactions that connect the audience to her circumstances.
Sightless, released in 2020 and directed by Cooper Karl, moves into a more enclosed psychological thriller. Petsch plays Ellen Ashland, who loses her sight after an attack and tries to understand the world around her during recovery. The festival description establishes that premise without requiring the viewer to know the later revelations. The performance shifts attention toward listening, uncertainty and trust. Compared with Cheryl's visible command of a social space, Ellen's situation changes how information reaches the character and how she decides what to believe.
The Strangers: Chapter 1, released in 2024, casts her as Maya opposite Froy Gutierrez in a story about a couple threatened by masked intruders. Lionsgate's presentation identifies it as the beginning of a new series of films. It is a distinct production from the 2008 The Strangers, and Petsch's credit belongs to the later film. The role places physical vulnerability and immediate decisions at the center of the action, making it another useful contrast with the longer, relationship-driven development available in Riverdale.
Her post-Riverdale work has also included Maintenance Required, a romantic comedy that she discussed alongside the release of The Strangers: Chapter 2 in 2025. That pairing shows the difference between the genre direction often associated with a performer and the full range of projects she chooses. The gallery here records an earlier phase: a 2018 convention portrait and a 2019 Riverdale panel photograph beside Camila Mendes. Both are public appearances, not frames from the horror films or images of Cheryl and Veronica within an episode.
For an introduction, begin with Riverdale and then choose Sightless or The Strangers: Chapter 1 to see Petsch in a central feature-film role. A romantic comedy adds a further change of tone. Across these projects, watch how the performance communicates control, uncertainty and the effort to read another person. Those qualities take different forms in a school ensemble, an enclosed thriller and a survival story. The selected credits and dated convention images provide a starting point while preserving the differences between the actor's public appearances and her fictional characters.
