Loretta Swit was an American actress best known as Major Margaret Houlihan in the television series M*A*S*H. The role placed her at the center of a comedy that also confronted exhaustion, loss and the demands of medical work in wartime. Her career extended beyond that familiar uniform into theater, television films, guest appearances and animal advocacy. For viewers who first encounter her through reruns, Houlihan is an inviting beginning rather than the whole story. Swit's other work helps place a long-running television characterization within a broader professional life.
Swit was born in Passaic, New Jersey, on November 4, 1937. Her stage work included Same Time, Next Year, Shirley Valentine and productions of Mame. Her official biography describes extensive touring and appearances in both musical and spoken theater. Those credits provide useful context for a performer whose best-known work was made for a camera. Theater calls for sustaining a relationship with an audience through an entire performance, while a television series builds familiarity over many installments. Swit's career included substantial experience of both kinds of continuity.
M*A*S*H aired from 1972 to 1983, following the staff of the fictional 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. Swit's Margaret Houlihan was its head nurse and a major. Her contribution earned Emmy Awards in 1980 and 1982, among ten nominations recorded by the Television Academy. The publicity portrait in this gallery dates from the show's first year. It belongs to the television production, and should not be confused with the earlier feature film or treated as a still from an unspecified later episode.
A useful way to revisit Houlihan is to pay attention to professional authority as well as comic conflict. Scenes involving the nurses can ask different things of the character than scenes built around a joke or a romantic disagreement. The Television Academy's interview archive includes Alan Alda discussing Swit's contribution to giving Margaret greater dimension. That provides a contemporary collaborator's perspective on a role that developed over time. For the viewer, comparing episodes from different years can make changes in the character's relationships and responsibilities easier to recognize.
Swit also originated Chris Cagney in the television movie that preceded the Cagney & Lacey series. Her official biography explicitly distinguishes that movie from the continuing series, which she could not join because of M*A*S*H obligations. Other work included The Muppet Show, Freebie and the Bean and S.O.B. These credits demonstrate different settings for her skills without implying that she played one recurring persona across them. The television movie is especially worth identifying carefully: a pilot performance and a later series casting are separate parts of a production's history.
The gallery pairs a 1972 CBS publicity image with Alan Light's photograph at the Governor's Ball following the 1989 Emmy Awards. In the earlier image Swit wears fatigues and sits with her hands behind her head. In the later one she is being interviewed in formal evening clothes. These are distinct photographic occasions, separated by seventeen years. One promotes a fictional character; the other records the actress at an industry event. Keeping those contexts visible allows the pictures to tell a more accurate story than an undated collection of familiar faces.
Outside acting, Swit pursued watercolor painting and animal-welfare work, activities brought together in her SwitHeart book and organization. She died on May 30, 2025, aged 87. Her lasting television association remains Margaret Houlihan, but the surrounding career includes live theater, film and personal creative work. A thoughtful introduction can begin with M*A*S*H, then move to the original Cagney & Lacey movie or her stage record. The aim is to recognize both the enduring character and the performer whose interests and working life extended beyond that one production.
An early M*A*S*H publicity portrait and a later awards-event photograph distinguish Swit in character from Swit appearing as herself.
