Lolly Adefope is an English comedian and actress whose work ranges from self-written live characters to continuing roles in British and American television. She plays Fran in Shrill and Kitty in Ghosts, two characters with very different ways of seeking friendship and expressing confidence. Her television work also includes Miracle Workers and The Franchise. The common thread is an interest in people whose outward manner does not explain everything about them: an accent, a forceful opinion or an eager smile may be the start of a character rather than its complete definition.
Adefope developed her early career through live character comedy. The Royal Television Society's 2017 profile places her Edinburgh debut in 2015 and describes the subsequent Lolly 2 show at London's Soho Theatre. By then her screen appearances included Rovers, Plebs and Sicknote, with Taskmaster also joining her credits. That route allowed her own writing and performance to be seen together. Instead of waiting for a television part to demonstrate what she could do, she could build and test a comic personality in front of an audience, then bring that experience to other people's scripts.
Her 2018 Edinburgh show, Lolly 3, took the form of a fictional portrait of herself through people supposedly close to her, all played by Adefope. Explaining the approach to British Vogue, she described combining observations of attitudes, gestures and voices rather than copying one individual. The resulting characters could be exaggerated while still drawing on recognisable social behaviour. She also recalled how seeing performers of her own age at Edinburgh made a comedy career seem possible. Her enthusiasm for the festival survived the move into television and film, including The Spy Who Dumped Me and Miracle Workers.
Shrill asked for a less overtly stylised performance. As Fran, the friend and roommate of Aidy Bryant's Annie, Adefope could play affection alongside irritation, confidence alongside poor judgment. In her 2019 Nylon interview, she welcomed the fact that Fran had relationships and a life beyond supporting the main character. She also described an immediate connection with Bryant, whose similar sense of humour helped their screen friendship. Adefope had been accustomed to unusual voices and broad characters; this role offered the challenge of making a more naturalistic person equally specific and interesting.
Ghosts places her in a very different household. Kitty is a Georgian ghost whose eagerness to make friends contrasts with the irritability and reserve of some fellow residents. In the fourth-series interview, Adefope described her as the youngest-seeming member of that improvised family, enthusiastic and instinctive even when she misunderstands events. Kitty's attachment to Alison can become possessive because she wants a best friend so badly. The elaborate costume also shapes the physical performance: Adefope explained that the layered skirts and corset were heavy and needed help to put on each morning.
The role demonstrates how an apparently simple comic attitude can work within a varied ensemble. Kitty's optimism gives the other ghosts something to react against, while her need for companionship supplies a more vulnerable motive. Adefope credited the six writer-performers with supplying carefully worked scripts and with being present to answer questions during filming. Elsewhere, her television characters include Dag in The Franchise, the superhero-production satire, as well as Fran and Kitty. Moving between those settings lets her vary the balance between an outward comic persona and the relationships that sustain a continuing story.
Her career continues the exchange between writing characters and interpreting them. In the Nylon interview she described the particular satisfaction of trying new material live and hearing an immediate audience response, a different rhythm from waiting for a finished screen production. The gallery reflects two distinct stages of her public work: a frame from the 2015 short Lolly in Marseille and a photograph at New York Comic Con in 2024. The short-film frame is identified as such, while the convention portrait records an appearance outside a fictional role. Together they accompany, rather than substitute for, the account of her performances.
A 2024 convention photograph and a separately sourced 2015 short-film frame document two different appearances.
