Lea Michele is an American actress and singer known for Rachel Berry in Glee and for stage performances including Wendla in Spring Awakening and Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Her career began on Broadway as a child and later moved between television, recording and theatre. Glee brought her musical performance to a large screen audience, while her return to Broadway connected that visibility with an earlier professional history. The roles are distinct: Rachel is a fictional aspiring performer, while Michele's own stage credits have their separate productions, collaborators and dates.
The Broadway League's performance record lists Michele as a replacement Young Cosette and alternate Young Eponine in Les Misérables beginning in April 1995, with a Gavroche understudy credit as well. She subsequently played the Little Girl in Ragtime and Shprintze in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, where she also understudied Chava. These early assignments placed her in established musical ensembles before she originated a leading role. The record identifies her particular parts, rather than treating every character in those productions as a role she performed regularly.
Michele originated Wendla in Spring Awakening on Broadway, performing from the 2006 preview period through May 2008. The production paired her with Jonathan Groff and director Michael Mayer, collaborators who remained important in later accounts of her work. Her television role as Rachel Berry followed in Glee, which ran from 2009 to 2015. The Television Academy records a 2010 nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for that performance. A nomination is the relevant distinction here, not an individual Emmy win. Recording work, including the album Louder, developed alongside her acting.
Scream Queens offered a different television assignment after Glee. Michele played Hester, whose deliberately awkward appearance and macabre interests belonged to the horror-comedy's heightened world. Playbill's 2015 interview introduction describes her moving from the central musical role in Glee to a supporting ensemble part with a neck brace. The contrast is useful when following her screen work: the familiar singing performer was taking on a character whose comic effect depended on an altered physical presentation and a different genre. Hester should not be confused with Rachel Berry or treated as another version of the same fictional biography.
In a 2022 Broadway.com interview, Michele connected her desire to return to the stage with the Spring Awakening reunion concert. She recalled Michael Mayer introducing her to the Funny Girl film years earlier and discussed how her experience had changed her approach to Fanny Brice. She also emphasized the trust she felt working with Ramin Karimloo. These comments describe preparation and collaboration rather than a simple transfer of Glee's fictional Funny Girl storyline into real life. Michele entered the actual Broadway revival as a replacement on September 6, 2022, and continued through September 3, 2023.
Her rehearsal conversation with Vogue described the practical demands of Funny Girl, including a dress rehearsal with numerous costume changes and the preparation required to sustain the performance. The later Broadway record adds Florence Vassy in the 2025–2026 revival of Chess, along with a co-producer credit. Those entries extend the stage chronology beyond Funny Girl without describing an ended engagement as currently running. Across the record, child ensemble work, an original musical role, television and replacement casting each represent a different route into performing for an audience.
The gallery includes three independently sourced photographs from different career settings: David Shankbone's 2010 Time 100 gala portrait, a 2014 Soundcheck performance photograph associated with Louder, and Gage Skidmore's 2015 San Diego Comic-Con panel image. The Soundcheck frame shows Michele singing, while the other two document public appearances. None is labeled as a scene from Spring Awakening or Funny Girl. Keeping the photographs' dates and credits visible allows readers to distinguish the recording, publicity and convention contexts without relying on repeated crops of one image.
