Intro

Kiernan Shipka is an actor known for Sally Draper in Mad Men and the title role in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Those parts connect two very different kinds of coming-of-age story: one within a family observed across the years of a period drama, the other in a supernatural world where a teenager's choices have dangerous consequences. Her work also includes Feud: Bette and Joan, The Blackcoat's Daughter and Totally Killer, extending that television history into several forms of suspense and horror.

Career snapshot

Originally from Chicago, Shipka built a body of screen work while still young. AMC's biography lists appearances in Monk and Heroes, the television film Smooch and the feature Very Good Girls, as well as voice work in Sofia the First and The Legend of Korra. Those credits show that Mad Men developed alongside other assignments rather than in isolation. Voice performance, guest roles and an ongoing ensemble character involve different relationships to a production, and each offers another way to explore her early professional experience.

The entry point

As Sally Draper, Shipka worked opposite Jon Hamm and January Jones through Mad Men's seven seasons. Sally's place within the family gives the series a perspective distinct from the adults' work and social lives. She observes choices whose full meaning is not always explained to her, and the performance can make a reaction or a silence carry weight. Watching Sally's scenes in sequence is a useful way to follow the family story across time, alongside the advertising-world narrative for which the series is widely known.

Screen identity and style

Netflix's original casting announcement describes Sabrina Spellman as a young woman divided between human and witch identities, beginning a magical education while trying to maintain an ordinary school life. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina places Shipka at the center of that conflict. The premise gives her a different responsibility from Sally's within a larger ensemble: Sabrina's decisions repeatedly set the story in motion. The supernatural setting is also a change in scale, turning questions of loyalty and independence into choices with consequences for the surrounding world.

Collaborations and patterns

In Feud: Bette and Joan, Shipka portrayed B.D., Bette Davis's teenage daughter, opposite Susan Sarandon as Davis. Netflix's announcement identifies that performance alongside the Mad Men role when introducing her as Sabrina. The connection is useful without making the characters interchangeable. Both Sally and B.D. occupy daughter roles, but they belong to different stories and relationships. Moving from those parts to Sabrina shows a change not only in genre but in where Shipka's character sits within the structure of the production.

Era reflection

Her film work provides further contrasts. A24 lists Shipka in Osgood Perkins's The Blackcoat's Daughter alongside Emma Roberts, Lucy Boynton and James Remar. In Totally Killer, Prime Video identifies her as Jamie, a teenager who travels back to 1987 and attempts to prevent a killer's original crimes. That time-travel premise brings a different approach to suspense from Sabrina's ongoing supernatural story. Comparing the projects makes room for the variety within horror itself, rather than treating every frightening story as the same acting assignment.

Legacy and rediscovery

The gallery records Shipka at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2010 and at a Mad Men PaleyFest event in 2014. These are separate photographs from her public career, not scenes depicting Sally. They document the period during which audiences were seeing her grow within the series. A viewing route can begin with Sally, continue to Sabrina and then compare one of the feature films. Following the changes in character responsibility, setting and tone gives a clearer view of the work than treating the later roles simply as extensions of the earliest one.
