Kaylee DeFer is best known for two contrasting television characters: Hillary Gold in the family sitcom The War at Home and Ivy Dickens in the serial drama Gossip Girl. One role places her inside an established household; the other depends on an outsider pretending to belong to a wealthy family. Her screen work also includes a ski-resort drama, episodic television and independent films. Those changes of setting give a more complete picture of her acting career than the deception associated with Ivy alone.
DeFer grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and performed in musical theatre and dance before moving to Los Angeles as a teenager. In an interview with Her Campus, she described the attraction of acting as the chance to inhabit many different lives. She also recalled working in an agency office, preparing other performers' headshots while learning about available projects. The account presents her early career as a combination of auditions, practical work and persistence, rather than a single discovery that immediately settled her professional future.
Her early television appearances included Drake & Josh in 2004 and the recurring role of Scarlett in The Mountain. The latter followed people connected to a ski resort and included Penn Badgley, with whom she would later work again on Gossip Girl. In 2005 she began playing Hillary Gold in The War at Home, which ran for two seasons. Hillary is the eldest child in the Gold family, and the part placed DeFer within a continuing domestic comedy, with conflict arising through the family's everyday interactions.
Gossip Girl introduced DeFer during its fourth season in 2011. Her character is Ivy Dickens, who impersonates Charlotte, known as Charlie, Rhodes; the assumed identity is part of the story, not a second interchangeable name for the real family member. DeFer remained involved through the show's sixth and final season. The role required her to present someone trying to pass within an established social circle while keeping track of what different characters knew. It gave an incoming performer a disruptive place in a series whose central relationships were already familiar to viewers.
In a 2011 Female First interview, DeFer explained that Ivy's attachment to the family complicated the deception: the character was carrying out a job but also developing feelings of belonging. She described joining an established cast as initially intimidating and then becoming more comfortable. Her comments about costume fittings also make the production process tangible, noting that a party sequence could require days in the same clothes and jewellery. The glamour on screen was therefore supported by repeated practical decisions about movement, comfort and continuity during filming.
DeFer's films include Flicka, in which she played Miranda Koop, and the independent Western Mattie, also circulated as Renegade. In the horror thriller Darkroom, directed by Britt Napier, she played Michelle, a young woman burdened by a fatal accident who enters a dangerous house. The film's cast also includes Elisabeth Röhm and Christian Campbell. DeFer discussed the project while it was still awaiting release, describing an eighteen-day shoot during her television hiatus. Its compressed production and central endangered character offered a different assignment from an ongoing ensemble series.
Guest work on programmes such as Ghost Whisperer, CSI: Miami and How I Met Your Mother further connects her career to the television of the 2000s and early 2010s. A 2024 podcast conversation revisited Gossip Girl and The Mountain as well as her life after becoming a parent. The gallery preserves two different photographs from the same October 2011 Denim Habit opening, both by Joella Marano. They show distinct moments at one event and are labelled accordingly, rather than being presented as different years, characters or film productions.
