Jon Hamm is an American actor whose portrayal of Don Draper in Mad Men became a major television role of the 2000s and 2010s. His career also encompasses comedy, feature-film ensembles and later series including Fargo and Your Friends & Neighbors. Draper is an important starting point, but the broader work places Hamm in markedly different situations. A career introduction can follow the advertising drama while also looking at how he functions as a guest comedian, supporting film performer and lead in other television stories.
Hamm was born in St. Louis and earned an English degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia. His television credits before Mad Men included Providence and The Division. Those earlier parts belong to the period before Don Draper became his most familiar screen identity. They offer useful context for a career that developed through continuing television work rather than beginning with one instantly defining performance. The later prominence of Mad Men should not erase those earlier appearances or the distinct programs in which they occurred.
Mad Men ran from 2007 to 2015 and placed Hamm's Don Draper within the professional and personal world of an advertising agency. He received the 2015 Emmy for lead actor in a drama series for the role. The Television Academy's long-form interview with Hamm also records his discussion of working with John Slattery and of the relationship between Draper and Roger Sterling. That ensemble context matters: the central character's story unfolds through continuing interactions with colleagues, family and other people around him.
Comedy provided a different outlet alongside the drama. Hamm appeared in 30 Rock, hosted Saturday Night Live and worked with Larry David in Clear History. He also starred opposite Daniel Radcliffe in A Young Doctor's Notebook and served as an executive producer on that project. These credits are useful counterpoints to Draper because they place the same performer within different rhythms and relationships. A comic guest appearance may establish its effect within a short scene, while a continuing series can develop a character over many episodes.
Hamm's feature-film credits include The Town, Bridesmaids, Million Dollar Arm, Baby Driver and Top Gun: Maverick. He also appeared in and produced Friends With Kids. The selected titles span crime stories, comedy and larger-scale studio filmmaking. They should be approached as individual productions rather than as extensions of Mad Men. Comparing a film ensemble with the long television role highlights the changing amount of narrative space available to an actor and the importance of the surrounding cast in shaping each performance.
Fargo's fifth story cast Hamm as Roy Tillman. Your Friends & Neighbors subsequently placed him at the center as Andrew 'Coop' Cooper, a disgraced hedge-fund manager who turns to stealing from affluent neighbors after losing his job. Hamm also executive produces the Apple series, which debuted in 2025. The two characters provide later television reference points with separate settings and moral circumstances. Their connection is the performer, while their actions and relationships belong to the particular fictional worlds of the respective shows.
A viewing route can start with Mad Men, add a comedy appearance or a feature such as Million Dollar Arm, and then turn to Fargo or Your Friends & Neighbors. This is a selected path rather than a complete filmography. The gallery contains a 2010 event photograph and a separate 2008 group image in which Hamm stands in the center. These public photographs document appearances during his working career. Captions identify him within the group and preserve the source information without presenting the events as scenes from a film or television episode.
