John Glover is an American stage, film and television actor known to Smallville audiences as Lionel Luthor. His career also includes a Tony-winning dual performance in Love! Valour! Compassion!, numerous Broadway revivals and five Emmy nominations. Lionel is therefore one prominent chapter in a much wider record. The combination of theatrical ensemble work, recurring television and sharply defined film supporting roles makes Glover particularly rewarding to revisit across different media, where similar resources of voice and gesture serve very different characters.
Glover's Broadway career began with The Selling of the President. The official Broadway database subsequently records work in The Great God Brown, Don Juan, The Visit and Frankenstein, among other productions. His later stage roles include Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, Leo in Design for Living and the title character in Tartuffe. Those credits place him in several theatrical traditions, from social comedy to heightened drama, and establish that his stage career developed alongside screen work rather than simply following television recognition.
Smallville casts Glover as Lex Luthor's father, placing Lionel inside both a family relationship and a larger story about power. His exchanges with Michael Rosenbaum's Lex often make business language inseparable from personal pressure. For a rewatch, watch how a courteous line can carry a challenge, or how a pause changes the balance in a conversation. The role gives Glover time to develop ambiguity over multiple episodes, unlike a film part that must establish its function within a handful of scenes.
His film credits include Julia, Annie Hall, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Scrooged, The Chocolate War and Gremlins 2. These films differ greatly in tone, but they illustrate the usefulness of a character actor who can create a strong impression without being the central protagonist. The L.A. Theatre Works biography also lists Batman and Robin and Payback. Moving between those credits and Smallville helps separate the individual performances from the broad label of a screen villain, which cannot describe everything in his filmography.
In Terrence McNally's Love! Valour! Compassion!, Glover played the brothers John and James Jeckyll. The Broadway production brought him the 1995 Tony Award for featured actor in a play, and he repeated the dual assignment in the film adaptation. Playing two brothers asks an audience to recognize differences within one performer's appearance. It provides a particularly useful contrast with Lionel Luthor: instead of developing one character through a television series, the performance distinguishes two identities within the same dramatic structure.
The Television Academy lists five nominations, spanning An Early Frost, Nutcracker: Money, Madness and Murder, L.A. Law, Crime & Punishment and Frasier. These are nominations, not Emmy wins. The range includes television films, dramatic guest performances and a comedy guest role. His later Broadway work continued with Lucky in Waiting for Godot, Uncle Ben in Death of a Salesman and Gaev in The Cherry Orchard. Such credits show sustained movement between the concentrated demands of a stage production and the different rhythms of filmed work.
A compact introduction can pair an early Smallville episode with Love! Valour! Compassion! and one of Glover's film comedies. The comparison brings out changes in scale, authority and vulnerability without requiring every performance to fit a single type. The photographs here document a 2013 Smallville panel and a separate 2024 Phoenix appearance. They show the actor meeting audiences after the original performances, not characters in costume. The on-page credits preserve their actual subjects, dates and photographers for that reason.
Two distinct public appearances connect Glover with audiences and his Smallville colleagues.
