Joely Fisher is an American actress, singer and author whose career includes television comedy, Broadway musicals, films and professional union service. Her best-known television characters include Paige Clark in Ellen and Joy Stark in Til Death. Onstage, she has played Rizzo in Grease and Sally Bowles in Cabaret, bringing musical performance alongside the comic work that introduced her to many viewers. These are distinct parts of a career that has moved between recurring television ensembles and live performance rather than remaining confined to a single sitcom role.
Fisher was born in Burbank, California, on October 29, 1967, to entertainers Connie Stevens and Eddie Fisher. Her family background placed performance close to her from childhood, and her later memoir would revisit that environment from her own perspective. She is also the half-sister of Carrie Fisher. The Broadway League records those family relationships alongside her stage credits, while her professional career developed through her own work in television, film and musical theater. Her public appearances have included both entertainment events and advocacy occasions.
Ellen cast Fisher as Paige Clark beginning in 1994, establishing a long-running comic role within the series built around Ellen DeGeneres. The Golden Globes database records a supporting-actress nomination for Fisher in 1998; it was a nomination, not a win. Later television work included Normal, Ohio with John Goodman, Baby Bob and the Lifetime series Wild Card. She then played Joy Stark opposite Brad Garrett in Til Death, which ran for four seasons. These series placed her in different ensemble relationships while keeping comedy prominent in her screen career.
Theater gave Fisher another sustained line of work. She made her Broadway debut as a replacement Rizzo in the revival of Grease and subsequently played Sally Bowles in Cabaret. The Broadway League dates her Broadway Cabaret engagement from June 3 through July 30, 2000, distinguishing her own run from the revival's much longer overall life. She also performed the role on tour. At the Geffen Playhouse in 2019, she played Gaye Dawn in Key Largo, adding a dramatic stage assignment to her musical-theater credits.
Her film appearances include The Mask with Jim Carrey, Mixed Nuts with Steve Martin, I'll Do Anything with Nick Nolte and Inspector Gadget. Television guest and recurring work extended to Desperate Housewives, Last Man Standing, Modern Family, Scorpion and Station 19. The Geffen biography also records her move into directing for television and film. These credits show a working career around and between her starring series, with supporting roles and guest appearances contributing to the range of productions in which audiences encountered her.
Fisher published Growing Up Fisher: Musings, Memories, and Misadventures in 2017 through HarperCollins. The memoir addresses her show-business family and her own experiences as an entertainer, with the death of Carrie Fisher forming part of its emotional context. She also developed a one-woman stage show associated with the book. Writing and performing personal material offered a different relationship with audiences from playing a scripted television character, placing her own recollections and perspective at the center of the presentation.
Her professional advocacy includes election as SAG-AFTRA secretary-treasurer in 2021 and reelection in 2023. In a November 2025 statement she addressed members as the newly elected Los Angeles Local president. These dated roles should not be confused with an undated claim that she still holds the national secretary-treasurer post. The gallery documents an awards appearance in 2007, the 2014 An Evening With Women benefit and a separate 2013 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ivory-crush event, where she participated as an IFAW ambassador.
