January Jones is an actor known for Betty Draper, later Betty Francis, in Mad Men. The role places her within the domestic world surrounding the series' advertising-industry stories and became a major part of her screen identity. Her work also includes the superhero film X-Men: First Class, the comedy The Last Man on Earth and the skating drama Spinning Out. Together, those credits show a career extending across period drama, contemporary comedy and films with very different scales and visual styles.
Jones's film credits before and alongside Mad Men include American Wedding, Love Actually, Anger Management and We Are Marshall. AMC's biography also records work in Swedish Auto, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and Steven Soderbergh's Full Frontal. These titles place her in a variety of ensembles rather than one continuous type of role. Looking at them alongside the television work helps separate the long association with Betty from the broader professional history that developed around that character.
Mad Men gave Jones a sustained part as Betty, whose relationships with Don Draper and their family bring the series into spaces beyond the office. The character's formal presentation can coexist with frustration and uncertainty, making small shifts in expression and delivery significant. The Television Academy records Jones's 2010 nomination for lead actress in a drama series for the performance. A rewatch centered on Betty can therefore follow a developing character across time, rather than treating her only as a reflection of Don's story.
In X-Men: First Class, Jones plays Emma Frost. The studio identifies Emma as one of the mutants assisting Sebastian Shaw, played by Kevin Bacon, within Matthew Vaughn's account of the earlier relationship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. This is a different dramatic world from Mad Men even though both productions use a period setting. The superhero film makes powers, alliances and heightened visual presentation part of characterization, while the television drama often leaves conflict within conversations and the conventions of everyday social behavior.
Jones's move into The Last Man on Earth brought her into a postapocalyptic comedy alongside Will Forte and Kristen Schaal. She plays Melissa, a role she discussed in an interview about life after Mad Men. The change in genre is useful for viewers familiar with Betty: a comedy organized around survivors learning to live together invites another rhythm of reaction and interaction. The unusual premise also makes ordinary social discomfort part of a much larger, deliberately improbable situation.
Spinning Out returned Jones to a family drama, this time as Carol Baker, mother of the characters played by Kaya Scodelario and Willow Shields. Netflix describes the series through the pressures surrounding a competitive skater's return after an injury. Earlier film work included Unknown opposite Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger, and Sweetwater with Ed Harris and Jason Isaacs. These projects provide further points of contrast, from a skating family's tensions to suspense and a Western setting, without reducing the performances to one recurring screen persona.
Both gallery photographs date from 2008, but record separate occasions: an Emmy Awards red-carpet interview and the Peabody Awards luncheon. They show Jones participating in the public life surrounding television, rather than performing as Betty. For a compact route through her work, begin with Mad Men, compare Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class, and then try The Last Man on Earth. The shift among those projects makes the differences in genre, ensemble structure and character presentation especially easy to see.
Two separate 2008 events show Jones during the early years of Mad Men.
