Intro

James Broderick worked across Broadway, live television and feature films before becoming especially familiar as Doug Lawrence in Family. He was born in Charlestown, New Hampshire, on March 7, 1927, and died in New Haven, Connecticut, on November 1, 1982. His screen career included both sustained television characters and smaller roles in ambitious films. Those different scales of work matter: the sympathetic household figure remembered from Family was one part of a career that also included a police officer, a counterculture host and an FBI agent.

Career snapshot

Broadway records place him in Maggie in 1953 as James Wylie. Later appearances included Alexander Edwards in Johnny No-Trump in 1967, Joe in the 1969 revival of The Time of Your Life and Neil Heywood in Let Me Hear You Smile in 1973. These roles kept theatre alongside his screen work rather than leaving it behind after an early apprenticeship. Broderick was also the father of actor Matthew Broderick, but his own professional record spans several decades and distinct acting environments before that later family connection became widely familiar.

The entry point

Live television provided another substantial part of his development. The Paley Center identifies him as John Alexander in the second part of Studio One's No Deadly Medicine, broadcast in December 1957. Sidney Lumet directed the Arthur Hailey drama, whose cast also included Lee J. Cobb and William Shatner. The record places Broderick in the demanding world of television anthology drama, where a performer joined an ensemble assembled for a particular story. It also establishes an early professional connection with Lumet long before their later feature-film work.

Screen identity and style

Brenner gave Broderick a recurring police role as Ernie Brenner opposite Edward Binns as Detective Roy Brenner. Paley's record for the July 1959 episode Word of Honor identifies both men in the CBS series. The portrait in this gallery comes from CBS publicity issued that same year; it is retained as a publicity image rather than mislabeled as a scene from an episode. The contrast with the later Family photographs shows a younger performer already working in the intimate, dialogue-centred form of broadcast television.

Collaborations and patterns

In Arthur Penn's Alice's Restaurant in 1969, Broderick played Ray Brock opposite Pat Quinn as Alice Brock, with Arlo Guthrie appearing as himself. The film drew on Guthrie's song and experiences, making the Brock household part of its account of an alternative community. In 1975, Dog Day Afternoon reunited Broderick with Lumet in a very different setting. As the FBI agent Sheldon, he joined a cast led by Al Pacino and John Cazale. The role placed him within the official response to the bank robbery, distinct from Charles Durning's police character Moretti.

Era reflection

Family brought Broderick to a regular ABC audience as Doug Lawrence, alongside Sada Thompson as Kate. Jay Presson Allen created the series, and the Lawrence children included Gary Frank's Willie, Kristy McNichol's Buddy and Meredith Baxter's Nancy. Paley's record of Rites of Friendship, broadcast in September 1976, documents that ensemble. The two gallery photographs preserve different views of the production: a posed image with Thompson and a separate scene with Frank and Thompson. They are not duplicate crops presented as additional career moments.

Legacy and rediscovery

The Television Academy records a 1978 nomination for Broderick as lead actor in a drama series for Family. It was a nomination, not an Emmy win. For viewers returning to his work, the most revealing route is to move between the long familiarity of Doug Lawrence and the more compressed appearances in Alice's Restaurant and Dog Day Afternoon. Together with the documented stage and anthology credits, those performances show a career built through ensemble work across media, rather than through a single television identity alone.
