J. G. Hertzler is an actor and author closely associated with General Martok on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His connection to that series began with another role, the Vulcan captain in its opening episode, Emissary. Later appearances made Martok a recurring presence in the Klingon stories, but Hertzler also played characters outside that identity. Theatre, other television work and writing belong to the broader career. The contrast between a recognizable public portrait and a costumed convention appearance makes the gallery a useful introduction to the performer behind the makeup.
His Star Trek work demonstrates how a recurring guest actor can become part of an ensemble’s continuing story. Martok’s later appearances extend across the fifth, sixth and seventh seasons of Deep Space Nine. Hertzler also portrayed Laas in Chimera and the illustrator in Far Beyond the Stars. These are distinct characters, not additional names for Martok. Watching them separately is a practical way to see the range required within one franchise, where voice, posture and relationships must distinguish people even when elaborate prosthetics change the actor’s visible face.
For an introduction, Deep Space Nine offers the richest continuing context. Martok’s position among the Klingons brings military duty, personal loyalty and leadership into the same story. A useful rewatch focuses on the relationship between the general and Worf, then on the wider political setting around them. The character’s importance also carried beyond the television ending into licensed fiction. This page’s parade photograph shows Hertzler wearing Martok’s recognizable appearance years later, but it records a public event in Iowa rather than a frame from any episode of the series.
Hertzler returned to the franchise in other series. Voyager’s Tsunkatse used him as a Hirogen fighter, while Enterprise’s Judgment cast him as the Klingon advocate Kolos. His non-Trek credits include Quantum Leap, Zorro, Pirates of Silicon Valley and Six Feet Under. These credits place the recurring science-fiction work within a television career that also crossed other settings and formats. For viewers following his performances, character names and episode titles matter: a familiar face under makeup does not establish that two appearances depict the same person.
Writing gave Hertzler another way to explore Martok. With Jeffrey Lang he coauthored The Left Hand of Destiny, a two-book continuation published under the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine banner. The first volume follows Martok and Worf back to the Klingon homeworld after the Dominion War and introduces conflict over the empire’s future. It is a licensed novel, not an unfilmed television episode. That distinction lets readers appreciate the collaboration on its own terms, as prose fiction developed around a character Hertzler had previously performed on screen.
Theatre and teaching provide a further perspective on his work. Cornell’s April 2007 Chronicle advertised Inherit the Wind at the Schwartz Center with Hertzler and Ed Schiff as opposing attorneys in the drama inspired by the Scopes trial. A later UPI report on his election to local office also identified his acting teaching at Cornell. These records document activity outside television production without suggesting that the responsibilities were interchangeable. A courtroom play, an acting classroom and public service each placed him in a different relationship to an audience or community.
Hertzler’s career rewards attention to the craft of supporting and recurring performance. Martok is the most familiar entry point, yet the other Trek characters, theatre appearances and coauthored novels provide further routes into his work. The portrait and the 2014 Riverside Trek Fest image below show two different contexts: an uncostumed headshot and an appearance alongside Robert O’Reilly as Gowron. O’Reilly is seated at the left; Hertzler stands at the right. The photograph documents their public connection with those roles and does not imply a new series production.
A personal portrait and a distinct public-event photograph show Hertzler outside and inside his familiar Martok appearance. The parade is identified as a fan-event appearance, not a filmed episode.
