Intro

Ian Bohen is an American actor widely recognized as Peter Hale in Teen Wolf and Ryan in Yellowstone. The two roles inhabit different worlds, one built around supernatural threats and the other around a contemporary ranch, but both gave him continuing relationships within large television ensembles. His career began much earlier, with film and television parts in the 1990s. It has since included period drama, fantasy, thrillers and a modern adaptation of Little Women. The photographs here show him speaking at the Collision conference in New Orleans in 2018, between major phases of that television career.

Career snapshot

Born on September 24, 1976, Bohen grew up in Carmel, California. Early work included Todd Field's Delivering and the role of young Wyatt in Lawrence Kasdan's 1994 film Wyatt Earp, in which Kevin Costner played the adult title character. Television appearances followed on series including Weird Science, Boy Meets World and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. These were separate assignments across comedy and drama rather than a single continuing role. His early film work with Costner also provides a connection to a performer with whom he would later share the wider Yellowstone ensemble.

The entry point

Bohen played the young Hercules in episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and in the 1998 Young Hercules television film. Those credits need to be distinguished from the subsequent television series, whose regular title role was played by Ryan Gosling. Other television work included Anderson Crawford on Dawson's Creek and Johnny O'Brien on Any Day Now. TVmaze's episode records document these appearances across the late 1990s and early 2000s. They trace a period of recurring and guest roles before Peter Hale became one of the most enduring characters associated with him.

Screen identity and style

Teen Wolf introduced Bohen's Peter Hale during its original run beginning in 2011. In an archived interview, he described working with creator Jeff Davis to develop the character beyond a straightforward villain, while retaining Peter's dangerous qualities and occasional capacity to help others. The role remained part of his career across the series' run and brought him back for Teen Wolf: The Movie in 2023. That return was the subject of further interviews about rejoining the cast and revisiting Peter. The film continued an established screen identity rather than introducing a new version of an unrelated character.

Collaborations and patterns

His film work during and after the television series included Evan in Wind River and Freddy Bhaer in the contemporary Little Women adaptation. In the archived Crooked Forest interview, Bohen described Freddy as someone who encourages the central character to pursue her ambitions. That supporting function differs from Peter Hale's volatility. He also discussed Roy Hazelitt, his Mad Men character, as a role he would have liked to explore further. These comments reveal an interest in how a character serves the larger story, whether the assignment lasts for a short appearance, a feature film or several television seasons.

Era reflection

Yellowstone cast Bohen as Ryan, placing him in Taylor Sheridan's ranch ensemble. In a 2023 Square Mile interview he discussed the difference between playing Ryan and Peter while emphasizing the need to understand each character's motives from within. Superman & Lois supplied another contrast when he joined its second season as Lieutenant Mitch Anderson. The part reunited him on screen with Teen Wolf colleague Tyler Hoechlin, now playing Superman. Their characters' connection had changed: Anderson's Department of Defense role placed him in conflict with the superhero rather than in the family relationship familiar from Teen Wolf.

Legacy and rediscovery

The two gallery photographs document Bohen's May 1, 2018 appearance on the Collision conference's main stage at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. One shows him seated and gesturing; the other captures a closer view from a separate exposure. Both belong to the same public event. Looking across the performances themselves offers a broader career progression, from young versions of established heroes to continuing parts in supernatural and western dramas. His interviews repeatedly return to motivation, collaboration and the task of making a character credible within the particular story being told.
