Hugh Reilly was an American stage and television actor best remembered as Paul Martin in Lassie. The role placed him within the household around Timmy and his collie, alongside June Lockhart and Jon Provost. His theatre and anthology television credits preceded that familiar family image, while later work included a markedly different character in The Edge of Night.
Born in 1915, Reilly built a Broadway career before becoming a television regular. IBDB records Dr. Spee in A Young Man’s Fancy in 1947, Jeffrey in The Curious Savage in 1950 and Toby Wells in Second Threshold in 1951. These dated credits provide a useful foundation for a biography that might otherwise begin with the Martin family. His work was not limited to one long-running television character.
Lassie began in 1954, but Reilly’s period as Paul Martin ran from 1958 to 1964. Those dates distinguish the series’ beginning from his arrival. In the Martin household, the adults provide both a practical framework and an emotional response to Timmy’s experiences. Watch how Paul listens to a problem before deciding what to do. A family adventure gains weight from the people who must respond when a child or animal is in danger.
Reilly’s fatherly role can be approached through restraint rather than spectacle. A reassuring exchange has to feel like part of an existing household, even when an episode’s plot is unusual. The 1960 cast photograph supplies a specific view of that ensemble, showing Reilly with June Lockhart, Jon Provost and Lassie. It represents this period of the original television programme, not an unrelated later remake.
IBDB also records Reilly in Dear Charles in 1954 and Fair Game in 1957, as well as a replacement touring engagement as Captain Fisby in The Teahouse of the August Moon. These are distinct productions and roles. The combination of stage and television work reflects a performer moving between a sustained live engagement and programmes made for audiences at home.
Reilly’s television record includes anthology series such as Robert Montgomery Presents and The United States Steel Hour. Later, The Edge of Night cast him as Dr. Simon Jessup during 1971–1973, a departure from the dependable father associated with Lassie. Comparing those parts helps separate the actor from a single public image. A familiar face may encourage trust in one story while serving a very different purpose in another.
Reilly died in 1998. A broader account of his career includes Broadway, anthology drama, family adventure and daytime serial storytelling. Begin with an episode from his Lassie years, then explore the stage record and the later television credits. The gallery uses a dated cast photograph and separately labeled series artwork to keep those contexts visible. His contribution to the Martin family remains an entry point into that wider working life.
