Hailee Steinfeld is an American actress and recording artist whose screen career includes True Grit, The Edge of Seventeen, Dickinson and Hawkeye. She has worked in westerns, contemporary comedy, period television and superhero stories, as well as animation. Her early performance as Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers' True Grit introduced a young lead capable of sharing the screen with an established ensemble. Later projects gave her a variety of different characters rather than repeating that first role's setting or circumstances.
True Grit, released in 2010, follows Mattie Ross as she seeks justice for her father's death. Steinfeld's Mattie joins a cast including Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. Paramount's synopsis identifies her character as the determined daughter pursuing the man responsible, while Amblin credits Joel and Ethan Coen as the film's writers and directors. The production is a particular adaptation of Charles Portis's story, and Steinfeld's performance belongs to that version rather than to an earlier screen interpretation.
Subsequent feature work included Ender's Game and Romeo and Juliet in 2013, followed by Pitch Perfect 2 in 2015. The range of those films is striking: science fiction, Shakespearean romance and musical ensemble comedy call for different approaches to character and interaction. They provide a useful bridge between True Grit and Steinfeld's later leading roles. Watching across the genres also makes it easier to separate the actor's continuing career from the particular expectations attached to any one franchise or literary adaptation.
The Edge of Seventeen brought Steinfeld a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the 2016 coming-of-age film. Woody Harrelson was among her co-stars. The contemporary setting offers a contrast with the historical world of True Grit, while again placing a young person's perspective at the center. As a viewing comparison, the two films show how a lead performance can organize a story around a character's experience even when the surrounding genre, language and social environment are very different.
In Dickinson, Steinfeld portrayed Emily Dickinson and also served as an executive producer. Alena Smith created the Apple series, which began in 2019 and ran through 2021. Its dramatized approach to the poet's youth gives Steinfeld a sustained television role rather than a single feature-length arc. The series can be approached as a creative interpretation of a historical figure, with its own tone and storytelling choices. Her producing credit is a separate professional contribution alongside the performance at the center of the show.
Marvel Studios' Hawkeye cast Steinfeld as Kate Bishop opposite Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton in 2021. The young archer and the established Avenger share a story set in New York around Christmas. The pairing gives the series an intergenerational partnership within a superhero setting. Steinfeld's work also extends to animation, including the voice of Vi in Arcane. These roles invite a comparison between an on-camera performance and one conveyed through recorded speech in collaboration with animation artists and the rest of a production team.
A compact introduction to Steinfeld's acting can begin with True Grit, continue to The Edge of Seventeen, and then sample Dickinson and Hawkeye. Each title offers a different kind of lead or central ensemble role. The gallery records a 2018 San Diego Comic-Con appearance associated with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and a separate 2015 public photograph. The images show Steinfeld at events, not fictional characters in costume. Their individual source and license records accompany the photographs so the public appearances retain their own context.
Two distinct public appearances from 2018 and 2015.
