Gregg Berger is an American actor whose voice performances include Grimlock in The Transformers, Odie in Garfield productions, Cornfed in Duckman and Jecht in Final Fantasy X. These characters span television, theatrical animation and games, with different demands on the performer behind the microphone. Berger is also a stage-trained actor with live-action experience. His career connects an earlier generation of American television animation with later franchises whose audiences encounter the same performer through very different fictional personalities.
In a 2024 interview for Supanova, Berger described touring in theater in the Midwest before establishing himself in Los Angeles. His work there included episodic television, films and commercials alongside voice assignments. A Los Angeles production of Cloud Nine, in which he played multiple roles, helped bring his versatility to the attention of animation casting professionals. Gordon Hunt at Hanna-Barbera and Wally Burr, associated with Transformers and G.I. Joe, were among the people connected with those opportunities. The account places stage performance within the development of his microphone career.
Berger's association with Odie reaches back to Here Comes Garfield in 1982. The dog communicates substantially through sounds and reactions, creating a different performance problem from a character with long speeches. Berger continued in the Garfield world through Garfield and Friends and later productions, also performing Orson and other characters. The separate voices should not be collapsed into one role simply because they belong to a shared franchise. Their continuity across productions is part of the connection that audiences make with his work.
Grimlock provided another enduring identification through the original Transformers television series and its 1986 theatrical film. Berger's credits in that franchise extend beyond the Dinobot leader, while G.I. Joe supplied additional characters including Spirit and Firefly. These ensemble productions depend on performers being distinguishable even when one actor supplies several voices. A filmography therefore benefits from naming the particular character and version of a production, rather than suggesting that a single performer voices every incarnation made across decades of sequels and adaptations.
His later animation and game roles include Cornfed in Duckman, the Gromble in Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Agent K in the animated Men in Black series, and characters in the Spyro games. Final Fantasy X introduced another audience to his English-language performance as Jecht. That credit identifies his contribution to the English version, rather than the original Japanese voice. Together these assignments show the variety of media in which a voice actor can work, from serialized comedy to game narratives that players revisit over many hours.
A 2019 GeekDad conversation at SacAnime focused on convention encounters and the relationship between performers and fans. Berger discussed the continuing appeal of older characters to children and grandchildren of their original viewers. The interview also addressed respectful interactions within organized convention settings. In his later Supanova interview, he again emphasized hearing which characters mattered to particular people. Such appearances provide a public space for audiences to connect a recognizable voice with the person who performed it, beyond the recording booth and the finished production.
The photographs here document three distinct public appearances. Two were made at Florida Supercon in 2012 and 2013 and credited to Super Festivals. Gage Skidmore's image records Berger at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2023. Each photograph has its own date, creator and Creative Commons license record. These are photographs of the actor at events, not frames from Transformers or Garfield. Keeping that distinction clear preserves the difference between a performer's public career and the animated characters for which he is known.
Three distinct convention photographs with dated creator and license records.
