Frankie Thomas moved from childhood stage and film roles to the title part in Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, one of early television's familiar science-fiction adventures. His career connects two distinct periods of popular entertainment: the studio pictures and Broadway plays of the 1930s, and the live television programs reaching young audiences in the early 1950s. He was also a writer and an expert on contract bridge. The three images selected here follow the performer across different ages and productions, from a literary film adaptation to a military-school drama and finally his television space-cadet role.
Born Frank Marion Thomas Jr. in New York City on April 9, 1921, he was the son of actors Frank M. Thomas and Mona Bruns. Broadway records establish how early he entered the family profession. He appeared in Carry Nation in 1932, followed by Little Ol' Boy and Thunder on the Left in 1933. In Wednesday's Child in 1934 he played Bobby Phillips; his mother was also in that production as Miss Chapman. Further stage roles included Jimmie Magee in The First Legion, Dewey Roberts in Remember the Day and Duke Winthrop in Seen But Not Heard.
In the 1935 RKO film A Dog of Flanders, Thomas played Nello Daas, the young aspiring artist in the adaptation of Ouida's novel. Edward Sloman directed, with O. P. Heggie as Nello's grandfather Jehen and Helen Parrish as Maria Cogez. The story follows Nello's ambitions and the precarious circumstances in which he and his grandfather live. The magazine image here shows Heggie at left and Thomas at right. It belongs to the 1935 production, which should be distinguished from the story's earlier silent adaptations and its later screen versions.
Thomas also became familiar beside Bonita Granville in Warner Bros.' Nancy Drew films, playing Ted Nickerson. Nancy Drew, Reporter, released in 1939, was directed by William Clemens from Kenneth Gamet's screenplay, with John Litel as Nancy's father. The youthful detective stories gave Thomas a recurring screen partnership different from his earlier child leads. AFI records that Nancy Drew... Trouble Shooter ended with a short appearance by Granville and Thomas asking viewers to write and announcing Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. That promotional exchange reflects the continuing-series relationship between the performers and their audience.
Another 1939 assignment was Cadet Lieutenant Murphy in On Dress Parade, a Warner Bros. military-school drama directed by William Clemens. Thomas appeared alongside Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, Huntz Hall and other performers associated with the Dead End Kids films. John Litel played Colonel Michael Riker. The trailer frame in the gallery identifies Thomas in this production's cadet uniform, not as Tom Corbett in a later costume. His film work continued into the early 1940s, including The Major and the Minor, before his best-known television role brought a new phase of recognition.
Tom Corbett, Space Cadet began in 1950 and continued through 1955. Thomas played Tom, with Jan Merlin as Roger Manning and Al Markim as Astro, in stories about young cadets learning to work together in a future space service. The series appeared across several networks during its run, and the property also reached audiences through radio and print. The 1951 publicity photograph presents Thomas in the program's imaginative uniform and setting. It documents the screen character that remained especially associated with him, rather than an actual military service or a contemporary scientific mission.
After his acting career, Thomas became known for writing and teaching about bridge, and he published Sherlock Holmes fiction. His books included Sherlock Holmes, Bridge Detective and Sherlock Holmes and the Golden Bird, linking an interest in deduction with both games and storytelling. He died in Sherman Oaks, California, on May 11, 2006, aged 85. A viewing path through A Dog of Flanders, the Nancy Drew films and Tom Corbett shows the changing opportunities available to a young performer who grew up in public, while his later writing adds another substantial chapter beyond the performances preserved on screen.
Three different productions show his transition from juvenile film roles to early television science fiction.
