Eriq La Salle is an American actor, director, producer and novelist. He is especially associated with Dr. Peter Benton in ER, but his screen career also includes Darryl Jenks in Coming to America, Detective James Van Der Zee in One Hour Photo and Will Munson in Logan. His later work has placed increasing emphasis on directing television and writing thrillers. Those activities extend the career of a performer already familiar to audiences, rather than replacing the acting credits through which many viewers first encountered him.
La Salle's official account identifies training at Juilliard and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, followed by years in theatre before his move into film. Career records place him in Joseph Papp's Shakespeare in the Park production of Henry V and in Broadway, off-Broadway and daytime television work. He played reporter Mike Rivers in One Life to Live. This early mixture of classical theatre, continuing television and film helped establish a working career before the medical drama that would make his name internationally familiar.
Coming to America, released in 1988, cast La Salle as Darryl Jenks opposite Eddie Murphy. ER began in 1994, with La Salle playing the demanding surgeon Peter Benton. He remained a regular through the eighth season and later returned during the final season. His role was part of an ensemble hospital drama, while his comic film performance belonged to a very different world. The distinction helps explain his range without treating the stern professional manner of Benton as a description of the actor's own personality.
Behind the camera, La Salle has directed episodes of FBI, First Kill, CSI: Cyber and several Law & Order series. His representative's biography also records sustained executive-producing and directing work on Chicago P.D. For On Call, released in 2025, he combined executive-producing, directing and acting, playing Sergeant Lasman and directing four first-season episodes including the pilot. Each credit represents a different responsibility. A director's work shapes the whole episode, whereas the acting role identifies one character within the finished drama.
La Salle's official website describes his interest in thrillers through flawed characters making consequential choices under pressure. He connects that interest with films he watched growing up, including The Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon and The French Connection. His books include Laws of Depravity, Laws of Wrath and Laws of Annihilation. Publication history needs care: later editions do not necessarily mark a novel's first appearance. His account presents writing, acting and directing as related ways of telling stories, while acknowledging that writing and directing have occupied much of his recent time.
At a September 11, 2026 Johnson C. Smith University event, La Salle discussed preparation, rejection and persistence with students. The university's report describes how he initially self-published his first two novels before a publisher took on later work and reissued those books. The conversation also explored Laws of Solomon, whose central character grew from a smaller presence elsewhere in the series. He encouraged aspiring artists to study their craft before opportunities arrive. This documented campus appearance provides a recent example of his engagement with readers and students beyond television production.
The gallery links two public phases of his career through separately documented photographs. Alan Light's image shows La Salle after the September 10, 1995 Emmy Awards, during his early ER years. Kristen Lamb's 2012 photograph shows him at ThrillerFest in New York, standing at the right of Lamb. The latter records a literary-event setting rather than a film scene. Both photographs carry Creative Commons attribution licenses, and the individual credits preserve their creators and context without presenting different crops of the same source as separate career milestones.
