Erika Henningsen is an American actress and singer whose career connects Broadway musicals, concert performance, television and animation. She originated Cady Heron in the Broadway production of Mean Girls and voices Charlie Morningstar in the Prime Video series Hazbin Hotel. These are separate performances in different media, but both place her within musical storytelling. Her earlier Broadway work as Fantine in Les Miserables and other theatre engagements provide important context for a career that became familiar to additional audiences through recorded voice performance.
Henningsen made her Broadway debut as Fantine in the revival of Les Miserables in 2015. The Internet Broadway Database records that engagement as a replacement role, distinguishing it from originating a character in a new production. Fantine belongs to a very different dramatic and musical setting from Cady Heron. Considering the two roles together highlights the range of material available to a musical-theatre actor, from a concentrated tragic story within an established epic to a contemporary teenager's changing place in a school community.
Mean Girls opened on Broadway in 2018 with Henningsen as Cady. The stage musical adapts the earlier film through a book by Tina Fey and songs by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin. Cady's position as a newcomer makes her a guide into the show's social world, but the role also has to register how that environment changes her behaviour. Henningsen's credit belongs to the original Broadway cast, not to the actors who played Cady in either feature-film version. That distinction helps keep an often-adapted character's performance history clear.
Her other theatre work includes Flying Over Sunset, Helen in Saturday Night and Nina in Dear World. Regional credits include Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Beth in Diner. These engagements place the headline Broadway role within a broader sequence of productions and collaborators. A useful listening comparison considers how a performer changes diction and phrasing for material written in different periods. The songs may be familiar, but each production creates its own dramatic circumstances and relationships rather than functioning simply as a recital of standards.
Hazbin Hotel introduced Henningsen's Charlie Morningstar in the Prime Video series beginning in 2024. Charlie's project of rehabilitating souls gives the animated musical a central ambition around which the ensemble gathers. The performance combines spoken scenes with singing, bringing skills associated with musical theatre into a recording-based production. It is important to distinguish this series cast from the earlier pilot. The character's hopeful manner also creates a different relationship with the surrounding adult comedy than the school-based social satire of Mean Girls.
Henningsen's television work includes young Gloria in Girls5eva, and her career also extends to cabaret and concert appearances. Her Raise Your Standards programme draws on the Great American Songbook, offering another setting for songs outside a full stage musical. She returned to an original Broadway cast as Sandra Dee in Just in Time in 2025. These credits show several ways a singer-actor can work: sustaining a character through a scripted production, recording an animated role and addressing an audience directly in concert.
A concise introduction to Henningsen can begin with the Mean Girls original cast recording, compare her stage history in Les Miserables, and then turn to the adult animated musical Hazbin Hotel. Each belongs to its own production context and intended audience. The two photographs here were taken in 2024 and 2025 and depict public appearances by Henningsen, not scenes as Cady or Charlie. Their separate source records preserve the photographers' credit and reuse terms while the biography keeps the roles, dates and media distinct.
