Ennis Esmer is a Turkish-Canadian actor, comedian and television host whose work moves between ensemble comedy and dramatic series. Viewers may know him as Oz Bey in The Listener, Nash in Red Oaks or Rich Dotcom in Blindspot. Those characters occupy quite different fictional worlds, yet each gave him a recurring place within a larger cast. His career also includes independent film and live hosting, alongside the comedy series Children Ruin Everything. The range reflects an early background in theatre, improvisation and stand-up rather than a single route into television.
Born in Ankara in 1978, Esmer moved to Canada with his family when he was three. A 2007 profile in the Turkish Canadian community publication Telve records his theatre training at York University and improvisation work at Second City. He also performed stand-up in Toronto clubs. That work led to hosting and creative-consultant duties on The Toronto Show, a programme built around Canadian music and comedy. The same contemporary profile places him in the independent film Young People Fucking, which screened at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, establishing that his screen and comedy work developed alongside one another.
The Listener provided a continuing television role as Oz Bey across the show's five-season run. Esmer's work attracted an ACTRA nomination and Canadian Comedy Award nominations, according to his broadcaster biography. He later played the tennis professional Nash in Red Oaks and the wealthy criminal turned FBI consultant Rich Dotcom in Blindspot. The roles place comic energy in different settings: a country club in one series and a crime investigation in another. His other recurring work included Kurtis Mazhari in Private Eyes and Dave Amari in You Me Her, extending that ensemble career across several productions.
Independent film offered leading work as well. In Daniel Perlmutter's Big News from Grand Rock, Esmer plays newspaper editor Leonard Crane, whose attempt to save a struggling local publication leads him to invent stories drawn from old movies. When an outside reporter exposes the deception, the discovery that one story may be true complicates his predicament. Markham Street Films' production record lists Esmer with Meredith MacNeill, Kristin Booth and Gordon Pinsent, among others, and records his Best Actor recognition at the LA Comedy Festival. The film turns a professional crisis into a small-town comedy.
Children Ruin Everything gave him a character who shares his first name. Ennis is the comfortable, child-free friend and colleague of James, played by Aaron Abrams, whose family life forms a central part of the comedy. In a 2022 conversation with television interviewer Bill Brioux, that contrast was the starting point for discussing the role: one man has children and responsibilities while the other appears to enjoy considerable freedom. Esmer's performance brought successive Canadian Screen Award wins for supporting comedy performance in 2023, 2024 and 2025, as recorded in the awards chronology.
Hosting continued alongside acting, including the Canadian edition of Wipeout and Roast Battle Canada. Other screen work included Kye in Sight Unseen and FBI Agent Khalil in The Madness. A July 2025 casting announcement from New Metric Media identified him as doctor Jamie Astaphan in Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story, a satirical miniseries. That announcement is a dated production credit rather than a claim about a future release still to come. These projects show the continuing combination of dramatic characters, comedy performance and direct engagement with an audience that marked his early career.
The photographs span a decade and preserve three different contexts. Phil Birnbaum photographed Esmer at a 2010 public appearance. Jesse Grant's photograph for the Canadian Film Centre shows him with Kristin Booth at its 2015 Los Angeles event honouring John Fawcett and Graeme Manson. A 2020 self-portrait is credited to Esmer himself. Their distinct authorship, dates and licences remain attached. For viewers exploring the acting rather than the event record, The Listener, Red Oaks, Blindspot and Children Ruin Everything provide four contrasting examples of his sustained television work.
