Eddie "Rochester" Anderson made a voice and a comic relationship recognizable across radio and television. As Rochester van Jones on The Jack Benny Program, he answered the fictional Benny with a skepticism that could puncture the employer's vanity. The performer became so closely identified with this character that Rochester entered his professional name. Anderson's screen career nevertheless extended beyond that partnership: he played Noah in The Green Pastures and took the central role of Little Joe Jackson in the musical Cabin in the Sky.
Born Edmund Lincoln Anderson in Oakland, California, on September 18, 1905, he came from a family of entertainers. His father performed in minstrelsy and his mother worked as a circus tightrope walker. As a teenager he joined his brother Cornelius and another performer in the song-and-dance act the Three Black Aces. That background matters to his later work: the radio star was also an experienced stage entertainer. The gravelly vocal texture that became his signature made him immediately distinguishable within a crowded microphone ensemble.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame dates Anderson's first Jack Benny broadcast to March 28, 1937, when he played a railway redcap. He appeared as Benny's valet that June, and the recurring character developed from those early appearances. Rochester was not simply an interchangeable servant in the scripts. His familiarity with Jack's schemes gave him the authority to question them, while Anderson's delivery turned the response into a comic event. A 1945 NBC photograph in the gallery shows him at a radio microphone, documenting the performance medium behind the later television image.
The Radio Hall of Fame describes an important tension in this success. Early Rochester material drew on demeaning racial stereotypes; over time, the characterization acquired greater depth and some stereotyped material was removed. That history should neither be erased nor treated as the entirety of Anderson's achievement. His popularity helped make him a prominent Black radio performer, while his comic intelligence gave the subordinate character unusual power within the exchange. The Library of Congress essay on Benny's program places Rochester among the ensemble members whose jokes repeatedly deflated the central star's self-important persona.
Cabin in the Sky, released in 1943, offered a different scale of role. AFI identifies Anderson as Little Joe Jackson, Ethel Waters as his wife Petunia and Lena Horne as Georgia Brown, with Vincente Minnelli directing. The story places Little Joe's conduct and the struggle over his soul at its center. Anderson is therefore the subject of the musical's moral fantasy rather than a commentator beside another comedian. This is the film adaptation of the stage musical, and its cast must be distinguished from the earlier Broadway production. The performance provides a useful companion to his better-known work with Benny.
Television made the radio partnership visible in new ways. The gallery's 1951 CBS publicity photograph places Anderson and Benny beside the antique Maxwell associated with Jack's fictional thrift. In a separate Bachelor Father photograph from 1962, Anderson appears at left as Rochester alongside John Forsythe's Bentley Gregg. The publicity description explains that Bentley borrows Rochester from Benny, hoping to learn the secret of Jack's economy. These images document separate appearances, alongside the earlier portrait and microphone photograph; they are not multiple crops presented as different career moments.
Anderson also worked with Benny in films including Man About Town, Buck Benny Rides Again and Love Thy Neighbor, and returned to the big screen in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He died on February 28, 1977. His radio star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and his 2001 Radio Hall of Fame induction recognize the importance of his broadcasting career. Revisiting that work means hearing the performer behind the familiar nickname: a stage-trained entertainer whose timing helped sustain a long comic partnership, and a film actor capable of carrying a very different kind of story.
Four distinct publicity photographs follow Anderson from radio portraiture and performance to television collaborations.
