Dwight Schultz is an American actor and voice performer whose television work includes Captain Howling Mad Murdock in The A-Team and Lieutenant Reginald Barclay in Star Trek. Those familiar roles sit alongside Broadway performances and animated characters. Born in Baltimore on November 24, 1947, according to the Broadway League's database, Schultz developed a career in which a recognizable live-action performer could also disappear into a character built primarily through sound.
The Broadway record provides a useful starting point before the television fame. In 1978 Schultz played inventor Charles Lang in The Water Engine / Mr. Happiness, followed that year by Major Alistair Ross in The Crucifer of Blood. Night and Day brought the role of George Guthrie in a production opening in November 1979. These are specific stage credits, not later television adaptations. L.A. Theatre Works also records his earlier off-Broadway work in The Water Engine and The Crazy Locomotive.
The A-Team made Murdock his most widely familiar early television character. Schultz joined George Peppard, Dirk Benedict and Mr. T in an ensemble built around former soldiers on the run. Murdock's skills as a pilot belonged to the team's practical machinery, while his unpredictable behavior supplied another rhythm within it. For a rewatch, compare the group's planning scenes with the action: observe when Schultz draws attention and when his reactions help another actor's moment land.
Star Trek offered a contrasting identity in Reginald Barclay. The Next Generation introduced the engineer in Hollow Pursuits in 1990, placing a visibly uneasy crew member among the Enterprise's highly assured officers. The character's later appearances allowed viewers to see more than that first impression. Instead of treating Murdock and Barclay as interchangeable eccentric parts, compare their relationships to the groups around them. One question is how much effort each character spends making himself understood.
Barclay continued into Voyager and appeared in First Contact. StarTrek.com's retrospective traces the character from his early discomfort to his work on Earth helping Voyager make contact across the distance from the Delta Quadrant. That progression gives Schultz's recurring appearances a cumulative function even without a regular place in the opening credits. A viewing route through Hollow Pursuits, First Contact and the later Voyager material lets the audience follow that change across different parts of a franchise.
Animation adds a different listening exercise. L.A. Theatre Works lists Schultz as Dr. Animo in Ben 10 productions, Chef Mung Daal in Chowder and Eddie the Squirrel in CatDog. It also records Mesmero in Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble. These performances shift attention away from a familiar face toward phrasing, pitch and character timing. Listen for how a voice establishes a social role before the scene has fully explained it, then compare that economy with a live-action entrance.
Schultz's selected credits connect theatre, action television, science fiction and animation. The gallery documents The A-Team's 1984 visit to Circuit Zandvoort and a 1996 Star Trek convention; the portrait comes from Dallas Comic Con in 2006. Each photograph is a public appearance, not a fictional scene. Together with the stage records, they offer a way to trace the career without mistaking the actor for any one of his characters or treating a single role as its entire extent.
