Intro

Duncan Regehr is a Canadian actor and visual artist whose work extends from swashbuckling television to painting, sculpture and writing. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and raised in Victoria, he is widely associated with Don Diego de la Vega and his masked alter ego in the 1990–1993 series Zorro. His official biography describes an artistic upbringing encouraged by his father, Peter Regehr, and subsequent study with painter Henry Poesiat. The performing and visual arts are both substantial parts of his career, rather than one being simply a footnote to the other.

Career snapshot

Regehr’s preparation for acting included classical theatre and training in voice, movement and fencing. The archived Zorro press biography describes his work in Canadian regional theatre and at Stratford, followed by film and television work. Among his earlier screen credits were Matt and Jenny, Wizards and Warriors and the miniseries The Last Days of Pompeii. He also portrayed Errol Flynn in My Wicked, Wicked Ways. That assignment supplied a particularly direct connection to the screen tradition of romantic adventure before he took on Zorro himself.

The entry point

New World’s Zorro ran for four seasons on The Family Channel and was filmed in Spain, with the story set in Spanish California. Regehr played the apparently studious Don Diego as well as the masked defender opposing a corrupt alcalde. The official series account identifies Felipe, Victoria and Diego’s father as important figures around the hero. The dual role makes a useful starting point for viewing his work: watch the contrast between Diego’s public behavior and Zorro’s decisive action, and how the series lets the audience share a secret concealed from other characters.

Screen identity and style

His other popular screen work offered markedly different kinds of physical and dramatic presence. He played Dracula in The Monster Squad, a role distinct from the heroic Zorro, and appeared in two Star Trek series. In The Next Generation he played Ronin in “Sub Rosa”; in Deep Space Nine he returned as Shakaar Edon. These are separate characters in separate stories, not one recurring role across both programs. Comparing them helps place a performer sometimes remembered for one adventure series within a wider range of fantasy and science-fiction television.

Collaborations and patterns

The Zorro production paired Regehr’s performance with the work of fencing and stunt specialist Peter Diamond. Its archived press materials describe the attention paid to action and swordplay, while the series itself places that action within family adventure and comedy. The production’s Spanish locations also belong to its identity. These details offer a useful distinction from earlier screen Zorros: Regehr participated in a particular television version with its own collaborators and production circumstances, rather than simply recreating a single earlier film performance.

Era reflection

Alongside acting, Regehr developed a career in visual and literary work. His official biography records exhibitions and the publication of The Dragon’s Eye, which combines visual art and poetry. The University of Victoria’s honorary-degree register confirms that he received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts in November 2008. That institutional record supports the honor without turning it into a claim about competitive film awards. His art also provides a broader context for the composition, gesture and characterization that viewers encounter in his screen performances.

Legacy and rediscovery

The photographs here document later public appearances, not scenes from Zorro or The Monster Squad. The Milton Keynes image is described by its archive as a May 2013 appearance, although its file metadata carries a 2014 date; the two dates are kept distinct. Separate 2024 photographs come from events in Des Moines and Richmond. These images record his continuing public association with his work. For a viewing introduction, begin with Zorro, then compare one of his Star Trek appearances while retaining the distinction between the actor, his characters and his independent work as an artist.
