Doug McClure was an American actor whose long television career is closely associated with Trampas in The Virginian. Born in Glendale, California, on May 11, 1935, he died on February 5, 1995. His work also includes detective series, historical adventures, monster films and television comedy. For many viewers, the familiar cowboy face is the starting point; following his credits beyond the ranch reveals a performer who repeatedly moved between leading roles and supporting work in very different kinds of entertainment.
Before The Virginian, McClure played Frank 'Flip' Flippen alongside William Bendix in Overland Trail and Jed Sills opposite Anthony George and Sebastian Cabot in Checkmate. His early films included Gidget, in which the AFI Catalog identifies his character as Waikiki, and The Unforgiven, in which he played Andy Zachary. These credits place the young actor in beach comedy, a Western feature and contemporary crime television before Trampas became the part that audiences most strongly associated with him.
The Virginian began in 1962, with James Drury in the title role and McClure as Trampas. McClure remained through the programme's final season, retitled The Men from Shiloh, which ended in 1971. A long-running Western depends on viewers returning to familiar relationships as well as new guest stories. When revisiting the series, notice how Trampas's presence differs in scenes of work, friendship and danger. The role provides a continuing point of recognition even as the larger ensemble and the programme's presentation change.
McClure's feature credits show how that established screen presence could be placed in new surroundings. AFI records him as Sam in Shenandoah, John in Beau Geste and Brian Fleming in The King's Pirate. Later he became Bowen Tyler in The Land That Time Forgot and its follow-up, The People That Time Forgot. The move from a television ranch to fantastic landscapes changed the scale and style of the action. A viewing comparison can focus on how a recognisable leading man helps an unfamiliar setting feel accessible.
At the Earth's Core reunited McClure with director Kevin Connor and producer John Dark, with Peter Cushing and Caroline Munro among the cast. McClure plays David Innes. AFI explicitly distinguishes this Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation from The Land That Time Forgot: despite shared filmmakers and star, it is not a continuation of that film's characters or story. That distinction makes a better rewatch guide. The connection is a group of collaborators and an appetite for fantastic adventure, rather than a single continuous fictional world.
Barbary Coast returned McClure to a period television setting, this time as Cash Conover opposite William Shatner's Jeff Cable. Cash was played by Dennis Cole in the pilot, with McClure taking the part for the series. The credited portrait comes from that production. Later, Out of This World put McClure in the comic role of Kyle Applegate. These programmes offer a contrast to Trampas: a gambler in an adventure series and a comic authority figure both give the actor different relationships to the story's central characters.
McClure received a television star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on December 16, 1994, at 7065 Hollywood Boulevard. A useful introduction to his work begins with The Virginian and Checkmate, then moves to a Kevin Connor fantasy adventure and a Barbary Coast episode. This route preserves the television role at the centre of his reputation while making room for the rest of his career.
