Intro

David Johansen was a singer and actor whose career moved between the New York Dolls, the Buster Poindexter stage persona and a variety of film characters. Scrooged gave him a particularly memorable screen assignment as the Ghost of Christmas Past. His performance career is broader than a musician's occasional cameo: a concert frontman, a cabaret storyteller and a comic supporting actor each call for a different relationship with an audience. Those changes in presentation are central to understanding his work.

Career snapshot

In a firsthand interview with the Recording Academy, Johansen connected his outlook to the varied New York artistic circles he knew, including experimental theatre. He described the Dolls' early performances as an expression of their environment rather than a carefully planned strategy. Buster Poindexter later provided another setting for interpreting songs and telling stories. The shift did not erase his earlier work. It gave him a different framework in which to draw on a wide musical appetite and shape the audience's expectations before a song began.

The entry point

AFI identifies Johansen as the Ghost of Christmas Past in the 1988 film Scrooged, opposite Bill Murray's television executive Frank Cross. The adaptation turns a familiar Dickens figure into an abrasive cab-driving guide through the protagonist's memories. Johansen's task is to disrupt Cross's control of the situation while keeping the journey moving. On a rewatch, notice how the ghost's conversational ease clashes with Frank's alarm. The performance belongs to the film's mixture of fantasy, broad comedy and emotional reckoning rather than to a conventional solemn ghost story.

Screen identity and style

Let It Ride offers a different comic partnership. AFI credits Johansen as Looney in the 1989 film with Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr, directed by Joe Pytka. The racetrack setting makes anticipation and changing confidence part of the comic rhythm. Comparing this performance with Scrooged is useful: one places him inside an everyday friendship and betting adventure, while the other gives him supernatural authority over the leading character. His distinctive delivery remains recognizable even as his position within the story changes.

Collaborations and patterns

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie brought Johansen into John Harrison's 1990 horror anthology. AFI documents its three stories and framing sequence, distinguishing the feature from the earlier television programme. The film belongs to a different performance register from the holiday comedy and racetrack caper. A concentrated anthology segment gives an actor less time to establish the character before events turn strange. For viewers exploring his screen work, these neighbouring late-eighties and early-nineties credits provide a compact route through several genres.

Era reflection

Personality Crisis: One Night Only returns to Johansen as a performer and documentary subject. Paramount describes the film through the span from his New York Dolls years to Buster Poindexter. Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi built the portrait around a Café Carlyle performance. In the Recording Academy interview, Johansen explained that the show let his Buster persona interpret his own songbook, with stories assembled alongside the music. That structure makes the apparent separation between his identities part of the film's subject rather than something to resolve into a single label.

Legacy and rediscovery

Johansen died in 2025, leaving work that spans recordings, concerts, fictional roles and documentary self-portraiture. The Associated Press retrospective connects the Dolls, the 1987 Buster Poindexter hit Hot Hot Hot and his film appearances. For a screen-focused introduction, begin with Scrooged, then compare a second acting role with the documentary's cabaret setting. This approach preserves the difference between playing a written character and presenting a musical persona. It also shows how a distinctive performer can remain recognizable without being confined to one style.

Rewatch notes

  • AFI credits him as the Ghost of Christmas Past in Scrooged.
  • He played Looney opposite Richard Dreyfuss in Let It Ride.
  • Buster Poindexter was Johansen's musical alter ego.
