Intro

David James Elliott is a Canadian-born actor whose long-running portrayal of Harmon Rabb Jr. made him the central face of JAG. The military legal drama followed a former naval aviator working as a lawyer, combining courtroom stories with action and the personal relationships of a continuing ensemble. Elliott played Harm from 1995 to 2005 and later returned to the character in NCIS: Los Angeles. His other work ranges from Canadian television and American sitcom appearances to the Hollywood historical drama Trumbo, in which he portrayed John Wayne.

Career snapshot

Born on September 21, 1960, Elliott established himself in Canadian television before the decade-long American series that made him internationally familiar. CBS's cast biography for Code 11-14 identifies Street Legal as his first television series and lists earlier appearances in China Beach, The Hitchhiker, Dark Justice and Knots Landing. These assignments placed him in several kinds of television storytelling before Harm became a continuing role. His professional name is David James Elliott; the municipal Walk of Fame in Milton also records his family name, Smith, in recognizing his career.

The entry point

JAG began on NBC before moving to CBS, where it continued for nine further seasons. In a 2020 interview with TV Flashback, Elliott recalled a lengthy audition process and the demanding practical work involved in the production. He described flying with the Blue Angels, visiting an aircraft carrier and working with a military technical adviser. These experiences supported a performance built around a character who had both flying experience and legal responsibilities. The series gave him sustained opportunities to develop Harm beyond the immediate problem of a single episode.

Screen identity and style

Harm's relationships were another important part of that development, particularly his partnership with Catherine Bell's Sarah MacKenzie. Elliott explained that the connection between the characters grew as the series progressed. He also directed episodes, taking on that responsibility after asking creator Donald P. Bellisario. The task required him to work on both sides of the camera while remaining part of the ensemble. His recollections emphasize the value of practicing his craft over a long run, rather than treating the series only as a succession of action sequences or courtroom victories.

Collaborations and patterns

Comedy has also been part of Elliott's career. CBS noted his guest appearance as Carl, a moving man, on Seinfeld and his recurring work as Terry Parson on Melrose Place. In the 2012 series GCB he played Ripp Cockburn opposite Kristin Chenoweth as Carlene. Speaking to Michael Fairman about that show, he described his earlier roots in stage comedy and welcomed the chance to combine comic and dramatic material. The role offered a different setting and social rhythm from JAG, placing him within a Dallas ensemble rather than a military command structure.

Era reflection

After JAG, Elliott continued to work in television films and series. The Man Who Lost Himself dramatized the story of Canadian football player Terry Evanshen, whose life was changed by a serious accident. Elliott also played prosecutor James Conlon on Close to Home and appeared as Russ Josephson on CSI: NY. Trumbo supplied another distinct assignment in 2015: playing John Wayne within a film about screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and the Hollywood blacklist. The role was an interpretation of a historical performer, separate from the fictional officers and investigators familiar from his television work.

Legacy and rediscovery

Elliott's return as Harm on NCIS: Los Angeles grew from a conversation with former JAG writer R. Scott Gemmill, as he explained in a 2019 interview. That return connected his best-known character with a later television franchise without replacing the original series. The gallery offers two different moments from his public career: a United States Navy photograph of a visit to the JAG set in 2001 and a portrait at Fan Expo Denver in 2026. The set photograph retains its group context; the later portrait documents a convention appearance, rather than a scene from a production.
